ok i was thinking of this because i have lots of car audio stuff laying around and my home theater setup is weak. very weak...

ok so i thought id throw an amp and sub in there, i figure the only problem will be powering it, i have a wall plug that i can adjust to 13.8V, but theres a big difference in AC and DC so im assuming i need some sort of converter to successfully do this. what do u guys think? good idea or should i just scrap it

Get a sealed battery, a decent battery charger, and run your car amp off the battery. simplest and cheapest way i know off. An AC-DC converter that will put out enough amps would cost a fortune.

Lambda makes the broadest range of high amperage 12V/13.8V AC/DC convertors from what I've seen.
Plenty of them off eBay. $100-400 for varying amperage supplies (20-100 amp) can power a lot of things. Much fun.

just get a variable dc power supply from radio shack or somewhere, and set it 12 V. or get a computer power supply and modify to get the 12 V output

I bought one of these for my handheld dvd player and it cost me $80cdn for a 5 amp model! that will not power an amp properly at all!

Computer power supplies produce 12VDC at 8A. Get a bunch of those and wire them in parallel, and you will get enough voltage. (However, I have heard statements about that not being safe power because it is un-regulated, but I have not had a problem yet.)

A PC power supply can be modified to put out around 15A on the 12v line by loading the 5v line with power resistors.. i've got 8 of them modded and wired in parallel in a rckmount case.. Plenty of power for a couple of fairly large amps..

buy a sealed gel cell (one that can be mounted inside the house without being vented .....ie excide xcd) then get a small auto battery charger (one that shuts off when the battery is charged)

run the stuff off that

one of those boosters from can tire might also work ......... the small one putts out 300 amp bursts just leave the ac charger plugged in all the time

I mean one of these booster units
