What amp should I get! RockFord Blows...
#1
Hi everyone, I’ve got a big dilemma. Like many of you I’m a really big fan of Ultra Low BASS! Here is the prob.
I have a pair of Infinity perfect 10.1 350rms subs in a band pass box. Originally I was running these subs off a 1200watt Legacy amp. Of course this amp had some difficulty really pushing these wicked 10’s.
Last week I bought a Rockford Fosgate, cuz everyone was telling me that Rockford is the bomb. But I discovered that this amp kills bass below 50hz and makes my subs sound Supper Punchy. Makes my head want to explode!
Luck for me I can return this garbage Rockford…
But what amp should I get??? I was thinking of getting an ALPINE MP-500 mono block, to match my Alpine deck but I’m not sure if this amp has enough power to drive these subs.

it could be your "band pass box" thats making the evil troll start smashing aboot in your pumpkin .because what works with one driver will not necessarily work with another .try a recommended enclosure for your subs before tossing your rock through the shop window .if by chance it is the amp,you might want to try a class a/b if the class d stuff is too rough fer ya

interesting how rockford is one of the oldest, and most respected brands in the industry huh? Maybe the problem is elsewhere? First, as already mentioned, turn the "bass boost" down. its like 12 db boost at 45 hz. thats probably 3/4 of your problem. After that, try a new box, you will probably prefer a large ported box.

I would agree that the problem is likely in the box.
Also, I have heard that the Rockord amps equipped with the "Bass ****" (which is crappy and @45Hz) will not make full power unless this little device is plugged into the amp. It doesn't have to be turned up but it does need to be plugged in.

Could be that your bandpass is tuned to provide a very narrow range of bass...it might be tuned from 50 Hz to 90 Hz or something...
Problem with bandpass boxes is that the larger part of the enclosure is tuned to the lower frequency BUT if the box desing is getting too big for the box builder they will often limit this critical attribute to a smaller size to keep the overall size of the "entire enclosure" a manageable size.
Then you still have the smaller portion of the box which is the upper tuning cut-off frequency. The box operates in this "bandpass", often extremely efficient (loud) and by the sounds of yours also boomy...no wonder you're getting headaches!
Also beware - it is very easy to over drive your woofer(s) below the lower tuning frequency with a bandpass box, without a highpass filter on your amp... in your case this sounds like it could be a problem.
I once built a sixth-order bandpass box for an AVI 12-inch and although it sounded pretty good and loud, it still never hit the really low notes. And it was a giant box for a twelve, almost 4 cubes!!
Try building a ported box, it won't be as loud as the bandpass but for the same physical size you should end up with quite a bit more low bass.
