wouldnt install because of "warranties?"

i went to a local audio shop which will remain nameless to ask about getting a mono amp installed. he asked me if i got it off the internet, i said yeah, not thinking it would be a big deal, and he flat out refused to install it. he also said that every other audio shop would say no, apparently it has something to do with the products being shipped internationally and him not being re-embursed for a product under warranty if something were to go wrong. is this bullshit or what? anyone else have an experience like this?

Well, he could be worried that if it's DOA you're going to try and blame him for damage to a piece of gear that has no warranty because you bought it from some shifty grey market retailer.

That being said, if you brought him some used gear from your last car, would he refuse to install that too?

he's an idiot and obviously doesn't want to make any money. All he has to do, is specifically state on the bill that they offer no warranty with regards to the function or performance of the unit as it's not purchased from them, and have you sign it prior to install. He's very short sighted. I would jump at the opportunity to gain a new client by doing a good job for him and letting him know to come to me before buying online to see what I could do for him in the future. Find another shop.

im going to this is stupid. if he wants to turn down business because i didnt buy from him that doesnt make any sense whatsoever. hes going to turn down more business after losing a sale to me. Wouldnt there be a warranty from the MANUFACTURER as well as the retailer? i got it from a reputable online store not some shady ebay seller. regardless, im not telling the next shop i bought it from the internet.

You did not come into this dealer that is for sure....

Here is things to consider and one very important thing already laid out above.

"Well, he could be worried that if it's DOA you're going to try and blame him for damage to a piece of gear that has no warranty because you bought it from some shifty grey market retailer."

This is very true. I had a customer in here from Campbell River yesterday that had purchased his item online and it had worked for him. The install was completed in Campbell River. Now 4 months later there is a problem with the unit. We went through the wiring, did our job and removed the unit, customer paid his bill. Now he is sending the unit back to the US for service.

If you buy online, from most of the online sites, understand that what they say and what the manufacturer says about warranty are most often two totally different things. If you buy in the US market and have it shipped up, there is zero warranty on the items on them here in Canada, there is no obligation for any Canadian retailer to look after you under warranty. You must return it to the US retailer that you purchased it from. If they said that they were an "authorized" dealer and you took them at their word because it says so on their site and you did not confirm it with the US manufacturer, then you might not even have a warranty from the manufacturer in the US. You would have a warranty as indicated from the seller only. At the end of the day though, someone should look after you but at what cost? Time, shipping and insurance both ways and what if the guy can't fix it?

We do not turn down an install unless the install is a known can of worms. If I tell you that I am going to break this panel on the roof of your 98 GMC PU and you say no you can't break it, I will turn down the install as those panels break all the time. The vehicle is old, the plastic is brittle. This has nothing to do with the product at all. If you think that my time is not worth what I charge and offer me what you think is right, then I can turn down the install. We don't work for free, neither do you. You don't work for 75% of you paycheque, why should we work for 75% of what the job is worth. So yes we turn down installs as well. As for where the product comes from, it does not matter to me at all where it comes from. Purchase items from me and the install, well, the deal is a little better and we cap labour off. Bring items purchased elsewhere, unfortunately we do not cap our labour off (but it has happened before so you never know).

At the end of the day, I am less than an hour away from you and would be pleased to have a look at what you have and give you a quote on installing it. I will tell you straight out if I think you are making a mistake and wasting money as well. Interested, 250-897-3397 or PM me here on the site.

Some shops won't put in used gear or that bought from somewhere else. The situation can arise where it is installed and is either DOA or maybe it works for some period of time and then stops. The shop says they put it in correctly and the product is at fault. The manufacturer says the product is reliable and was installed incorrectly. Now what?

For this reason, I tell people up front - if it's used or from somewhere else and I install it and it does not work, tough luck. I've been installing for 20years and will hedge my bet that it isn't anything I have done wrong.

Past there, I will flat out refuse to book an appt. to install a car starter that is not bought at our shop. IME people have far more problems with car starters (99% of the time because of their own ignorance) than anything other product and it is not worth the hassle of either trying to educate them on how to use their own junk or try to figure out why it doesn't work anymore.

IME ppl?? what kind of ppl are those?

In my personal experience with local installers, one they hate it if you get your gear elsewhere and two will treat you like a shitball will maggots on it because you didn't get your gear from them. I had an appointment set up with a reputable local installer, even went down to have them look at it my car so we could understand what would be done and where stuff would be placed(installer was sick so I did it with the store manager) etc etc...day before my appointment i get a call from the same store manager telling me they are out of some install equipment so i'm being bumped a few days, i was cool with a few days(was supposed to be on a Friday) so i said Mon. or Tue? uh no maybe next Friday...after my initial shock I asked him whats really going on... a few days is not a week or more, his response "well one of MY guys just came in a bought almost all my stuff so..." I responded " I have all my own stuff you only need the tools and guys, but since I didn't buy my stuff from YOU I'm getting screwed over? I was still gonna be spending $600 bucks in your business, now someone else is gonna get that money. Thank-you have a nice day"
It still frosts my *** when i think about it because the audio manager was really nice, knew his stuff and spent alot of time explaining stuff to me(much like Rob aka MR2NR did), but places don't get my money when they try to on me and I've let all my co-workers and friends know it. I only feel bad about it because like I said the audio manager seems like an awesome guy(Rob and others knows him) who would of done a bang up job.
