So I've decided I needed something to replace all of the breaking down equipment I had in my car. Being that I had Hertz MLK165's it only seemed fit that I replace them with the new Hertz Mille series. The goal is excessive volume while sounding great. I decided to go with a 3-way set up to keep more control over crossover points and the plan is to EQ the 6.5"s up for snare drums as well. I understand this will have some ill-effects as well, but FFFF it.

The gear that's staying:
Pioneer AVH-P5900DVD (running sources)
Alpine CDA-9833 (running active x-overs, time alignment, EQ)

The new gear:
Hertz ML1600 6.5"s
Hertz ML700 3"s
Hertz ML280 1" tweeters
2x Hertz HDP4 (one running the 3"s and tweets, one running bridged on the 6.5"s)
Hertz HDP1
2x Hertz HX380 subwoofers (hi-energy 15"s)
Connections cabling

I was guided with a lot of help on the pods from our installer at Audiolink here in Saskatoon, Matt Haider. He does GREAT custom work and is exceptionally about this stuff. There was a lot of times I said "thats good enough", and he told me to FFFF a goat and go the extra mile.

The pods were mocked up with rings, fleeced (pain in the *** with the small curves), resined and then fiberglassed. Then Bondo, sand, bondo, sand, bondo, sand etc. They were finished with rocker guard and paint that semi-matched the original color. Props to walkers auto for taking care of us for the supplies.

I'm only part way there as I still have to do sound deadener in the doors, the sub enclosure (not looking forward to it), and the trim piece for the amp rack.

Nice. I was considering that exact amp combination.

I really like them other than the gains seem to act differently on each one. Some of the installs we do the gain on the sub amp has to be pinned for it to do anything, and others it's too much at bare minimum.

Also, with my two 4 channels, the one driving the mids is around half (bridged remember), where the one driving the 3"s and tweets is rock bottom. I still had to dial down the mids and tweeters on the alpine deck to get it matching up. Strange I tell ya.

Nice. I really like the pillars that is some nice work. So how do the ml 1600's sound? I still have mine in the box. I haven't decided if I am gonna run them or sale them yet. I still have been looking around for a set of ml 165's.

So far everything sounds amazing. I can only imagine when everything gets some hours in it will be even better. From when I got it going last night to today after cruising for a while I've noticed a big difference.

Truly, the lowest spec part in any amp is the potentiometer that adjusts the gains. I try to not pay attention to where it finally gets set to, just that it gets set to the best spot for the best sound.

Personally, I'm leaning back towards the JL XD amps. Going with two 600/6 and one 600/1. I can make use of the extra amp channels and 600w on sub duty should be enough for me. Those HDPs are nice though!

great system. I have run everything you are installing and have a lot of experience with the product.

Id honestly say though your downgrading from you mille mlk165 components aside from having a 3"midrange..

IMO there isnt a better MIDBASS driver than the original mlk. Tweeter on the other hands i never really liked.. couldnt find an adjustment besides eq'ing the hell out of the 2-4.5k range to get it to sound right to me..

love the hdp amps and the hx380 subs!

cant wait to see it done! pillars look great too btw
