$900 GC @ best buy - what to buy?

I'd really like a 160gb IPOD to connect to my Alpine IVA-W200 ($380)

With the left overs, i'm sorta lookin for a home receiver. Wouldn't mind something.

I'd like to go towards 7.1 (not that i have that many speakers). Would prefer some decent power, cause loud is good. It'll be paired up with athena's top end speakers and a paradigm pw2200 sub (tha currenlty oesn't work).

I'd like a receiver that if possible does high end video switching and/or can convert component or the various digital sounds to go through HDMI to the TV as on my current receiver I lack outputs, as I've used my component inputs up. TV is HD capable, so....yeah.

One buddy recommended http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...68&catid=20313

I'm hoping to do the receiver under $500 as i'd also like to pick up a cheap set of IPOD speakers that I can take with me on the golf course to listen to music.

just an FYI the 6th gen ipods don't work properly with most aftermarket ipod interfaces. Alpine is now requiring an "authentication" chip in order to use anything other than the headphone output.

I don't know how well that receiver will handle HDMI. A lot of the cheaper receivers right now with HDMI in/out are just acting as video switchers and will still require a seperate audio connection. This looks like it might be in that group. It will cost more, but if you're into the home theater thing and running HD DVD or Blu-ray, hold out for something that can handle some of the newer lossless audio codecs like DTS-HD MA or TrueHD, as well as something that can upconvert video signal from your other sources and output them over HDMI. If your GC is good in the US (doubt it) then you might want to look down there.

That's a great choice... I actually just bought a 705, it's a very nice receiver... I watched the Transformers HD DVD last night on it, it sounded amazing... unfortunately I don't think Best Buy sells Onkyo

I am a proud owner of Denon 3808, and it's amazing. I love Denon, but they are not a great deal by any stretch of imagination, so if you want to spend $500, then Denon is out, as you cant get a decent one for that much money.

I think you should decide between Yamaha or Pioneer in that price range. Not sure if you care about cosmetics of the unit too, cause I do. All Denon models carried by Best Buy or Future Shop are ugly. Pioneers have very busy interface. Yammies look better to me.

Not sure if you care to get a unit which does HDMI 1.3, which allows you to get 1080P resolution from HD and Blue Ray.

To make the story short, I would pick a Yamaha for $500 - not Denon.

Why couldn't you get 1080p out of HDMI versions less than 1.3??
