wow this must be a 50 year old car! There may well be aftermarket parts to change your setup to 12 volts. Or try to just add a 12 v alternator and battery for your car audio. There may be another option depending on what you are trying to accomplish. get another 6 volt battery. Set up a switch/relay system that puts the second battery in parallel for charging and then in series for running your audio gear.

have you done any searching? a quick google on 6 volt to 12 volt converter has a lot of options. I suspect you may find a 6 to 12 volt adapter.

You could just be able to run a second 6 bolt battery and series it with the original for the audio. The car electrical would be run off 1 battery at 6 volts. I am assuming this would work as long as you had enough alternator to keep up with the audio. I've installed 12v gear in a 24v application using this method.

What kind of car too? Just for curiosity sake. If anybody cares, the 24v install I did was on a 1964 Mercedes Benz Unimog. One of those giant military 4x4 trucks. It was cool.

He didn't really ask about running a stereo. He asked why one would put an 8v battery into a 6v car.

Generally this is done so it starts easier. A 12v can't just be dropped in or all the bulbs, ignition coil, and all other electrics need to be changed but those will usually all tolerate 8v. The generator needs to be upgraded too though.

A common solution is to put in two 6v batteries in series, a 12v alternator to charge them, and then connect the car's wiring up to just one battery so the car still runs on 6v but 12v is available for any higher voltage accessories.

this does work. However the 2 batteries are charged with the same current as it flows thru both in series. However since both batteries are connected to different loads they will be discharged at different rates. The battery supplying the 6 volts to the car also supplies half of the 12 volts and will always be undercharged. The battery used to add the extra 6 volts only sees the 12 volt load and will be overcharged.

Yep. Not ideal for sure. If it was me I would convert it over to 12v completely.
