buying house - how are keys handed over?
Hey folks, bought a house, supposed to officially take posession on the 15th, thursday.
My question, do they just hand us the keys and thats that or do they turn them into their lawyer who gives them to our lawyer and him to us?
How does this process work???
(obviously never done it before)

shouldnt really matter since you are changing the locks anyways, right?
I too am wondering this as i am looking to buy a house soon.
I would assume that the keys could be handed over either way, i'd just be sure that there was a thrid party there to witness the exchange

yeah, i shoulda mentioned this was done as a private sale thru comfree, not thru a realtor....so...it's just us, our lawyer, her and her lawyer....
We will be changing the locks i suppose (more friggin money to spend).
I'm thinkin of some of those combination locks....always had those growing up and they worked rather well for us. I think they're about $120ish, dunno what a regular lock is worth :S

Before I got into the industry, i was a locksmith for 5 years. ALWAYS change your locks. People always have spares from theyre old house, and some people will use them! I have too many stories about people not changing the'yre locks, and then they wake up the next morning and they've been robbed! And its not all that expensive. HINT: the real money saver is to remove the locks your self and take them into the Locksmith shop your self.
its about $12 per lock to be re-keyed. plus about $2 per key. you can do it easily yourself.

She just called me back. Turns out she got the OK sometime around lunch to hand over hte keys to us, so i'm just gonna meet her at the townhouse and grab the keys from her as well as discuss any possible side deals.
So...turns out lawyers were kinda involved kinda not involved. None the less, i will soon be the owner of a house....just gotta change the locks now
