changing gears on a grand cherokee questions...
Hey guys n gals. My Jeep didn't have a whole lotta power to begin with (V6) and since putting some larger tires on it's even worse.
I've had a couple people say that changing the gear ration will help out. And that makes sense, least it kinda did the way one gentlemen explained how that'd compensate for bigger tires - but i know nothing about it.
Engine and drivetrain wise, my jeep is stock. What all is involved in changing the gear ratio? What can i expect price-wise? Any info at all would really be appreciated.
(Jeep does have 4x4) chances are i will not be installing this myself, cause i'm useless!!!

My 92 Yj has the 4.0L inline six also. I did a free flow muffler, splitfire plugs, and one of these: http://www.turbocity.com/product_inf...roducts_id=104

It woke the motor up nicely, might be cheaper than a gear swap also. That company also does high flow throttle body injection pieces, and other performance mods also.

I checked on various jeep forums....cause that was always my first thought, do exhaust, free up the intake etc etc (worked on my car)
But all of them said do gears first (Jeep really does lag off the line, once ya get up to 2500-3000rpm it's better, but below that it lacks).
On that note, how does your jeep sound with that muffler, i've always been hesitant to do exhaust just cause V6 (err I6) and exhaust don't often go together as far as sound go's.

Hmmm I find it strange that your truck lags off the line, I find the 4L to be a good torquey motor, sometimes I can start off the line in second gear even. Is yours tuned up right? Also, I still have the K&N drop in filter from my original air box, might work for your vehicle also. As far as the exhaust goes, it is the original 12 year old system, very rusty and I am running a cheap cherry bomb, so it is quite loud. Sounds pretty throaty, and burbly, a Dynomax or Flowmaster should work well also, I would think. I had a Dynomax a few years ago, but I broke the weld on it going over a rough road, so I threw the cheap cherry bomb on there.
Are you going to be off-roading with your Jeep?
Mud, rocks, sand, trail, etc...?
Tire size?
Amount of lift?
City driving or Highway mostly?
Answer those and I can recommend a gear ratio that will suit you best.
No offense. If you don't know how to do a gear swap then don't attempt it. You can mess up your crush sleeves VERY easily and the lashing has to be just right. Leave it to the pros and many, many miles will pass without any issue.

Heh, believe me, i'd rather have someone else do it. Chances are i also lack the tools to complete the job.
94 grand cherokee se
2" suspension lift (spacers)
31x10.5x15 tires.
Generally city/high way driving, offroad here n there...just cause i'm not driving a car, but i don't do hardcore offroading...just choose to take shortcuts here n there instead of roads.
I live in a big city (edmonton), so mostly city driving.
The jeep used to be pretty decent off the line, could start in second and what not, but going from the stock tires (about a 28-29") to the 31" made a huge difference!
