for the amd lovers
they have annouced that they are releasing their quad cores but infact its more like a server, they are using 2 duo core fx's to create what they call a quad core.
what newb says though about ram is 100% correct windows xp should have at least 512mb of ram, especilly if you are running norton :|
to clear up some issues if you purcase a mobo that says sopports dual core cpus, it wont work with core2duo because of the extra risistor they had to put on the mobo, so make sure it says core2duo ready.
dont worry you can get a core2duo and a mobo with ddr2 mem for about 500

To browse the net and do normal day to day stuff there is pretty much no reason for anything faster than about 1-1.5 gig.
Personally, I wouldn't install XP with anything less than 1GB of RAM now days. I have my firewall, antivirus, spyware monitor, video card drivers and my few other start up programs constantly eating about 500MB. I have 1.5GB of RAM so that leaves me with 1GB free after all the normal programs that run in the backround get going. 512 would be fine though if you don't plan on having any type of programs constantly running, such as a firewall, virus program, etc...

the other option is to buy a barebonez tower with pentium D or core2duo equivalent 2mb cache and 1gb of DDR2 ram for around $400-500.. (slap in my old HD and cdrw, sell old tower for $50, and Iam good to go)
Max budget is around $500-600.... if I go the cheaper route that leaves me with more $$$$ to spend on audio gear.....
what do you guys think I should do ?

what operating system are your running?
XP pro.... the comp was a free upgrade (via my boss's wife) from a P3 1ghz which I gave away... about 2 years ago.... (also running XP pro)
A guy I take some physics classes with told me today that my P4 is like an old ferrari... but I drive it like a pinto.... (much to newb's agreement)
After some research and the replies I've got (awsome!) if I am going new Iam leaning towards a decent mobo (asus p5bdelux or commando) that I can overclock and upgrade later... and a core2-6300.....
guess I may go over budget now....at the cost of amplifers and beer....

Go pick yourself up two 512 sticks and be done with it, you'll be happier for it
