DIY Home Subwoofer ---
Being that it is a DIY Article I want to use drivers that can be purchased from around the world, and Peerless apears to be very well supported world-wide.
And if I purchase it from Solen as a kit I get a decent discount on all the parts.
Thanks for the offer though...

I still have to end up with a 50" long port right?
(based on the asumption that anything smaller than a 4" round port would create too much port noise)
If my math is correct, a 4" in round port is 12.56in^2, which trasnlates to a 6.28"x2" rectangualr port...and from what I have read the lenght still needs to be the same as when you use a round port...
So, lets see...
Minimum (internal)front baffle size with a 12 inch driver would be 13" x13",
to then get a int volume of 1.59ft^3 (2747.52in^3)
would mean I would have to make the box 13x13x16.25.
The port would have to wrap around a few times to fit....
Does it matter how many bends you have in a slot port?

^ you can make the slot vent a labrynth off to one side. Yes the corners will affect length - making the vent shorter for the same effective tuning.
I suggest making one side removable and the last couple of pieces of the vent labrynth removable for some tuning ability. Also - play with some polyfill in the labrynth too.

Update
Well I have changed my direction...
I am now building a tube sub (Like the SVS offerings) with an Adire Shiva (complete kit) found at www.creativesound.com. ($550 with taxes and shipping)
12" driver, 16*39" tube and it will be powered with a 1000watt Buttkicker amplifer (amp retails for $400usd)
I will be doing a DIY article for this, so more details to follow...

I think what you meant was......http://www.creativesound.ca/
Also, I've spotted that amp priced quite a bit better than that somewhere.
