Doggy Doors....anyone know much?
Doggy Doors....anyone know much?
Hey Folks, due to a recent change, my 11 year old Husky, and my almost 1 year old Shih Tzu are now home alone for 10-12h straight each day. This isn't a problem for the Husky, but the Shih Tzu can't handle it. Thus i'm lookin for a doggy door.
Our back door has a screen door on the outside of our screen door. What i'm thinking, is for the winter, we can just remove the screen door and leave the main door there (buildinig a doggy door into it).
In the summer, we can put the screen door back on and just leave it open if need be or use it when required and let the dogs out manually.
Minor issue we have is, I don't know much about these doggy doors. I suspect I can get one of my uncles to do the install, they all build houses, so should be able to help, but i know jack about them.
Anyone have any experience?
Endura Pet Doors, Cat Door, Doggy, Doggie Door, Door Mount
is the one i found quickly oing a search ont eh internet.
The Husky's chest is 17" off the ground, and top of his back is 26". He can easily fit in an under 9" wide width.
The Shih tzu's chest is 4-5" off the ground and top of his back 9-10" at most.
I don't know if there is a good anwer, but i'm sure we could get one that is 10x19, and mount it 4 or 5" off the ground, that'd be almost the to the heigh of the husky and he wouldn't have to crouch much, likewise, it wouldn't be a huge deal for the shih tzu to get over.
Anyways...comments and thoughts, brands, experiences etc etc? (I had a very good experience with my previous landlord's doggy door that our husky used well).

The install for one of these doors are extremely simple. It should come with a template for the hole. The frame of the door comes in two parts and you will have to put both pieces on either side of the door and fasten with the hardware provided....Use silicone around the seams...
PS Make sure the door you get has a magnet at the end of the flap to keep it closed. If not, you will have some major drafts in your house...
