Torque is the difference. Also look for a two speed drill with a nice slow RPM on the slow setting. Most importantly lift it up and lift it over your head and with your wrist bent at funny angles, however you might be using it in the real world. That is more important than speed.
I've had a cheap jobmate 14.4 from canadain tire for about a year... it works pretty good...
punches through 1/8" thick steel without breaking a sweat anyway...
Im guessing it probably won't last 10 or 15 years like a quality drill would, though...

I have an 18 volt Ridgid drill, works great, tons of torque (510 inch-pounbds) and the charger charges both batteries at once... (big plus for me personally) I've used it to put a 4" holesaw through the backplate of a panel. It'll drill all day through 1/4" aluminum on one battery, 1/16, 5/32 and 11/32 holes, plus counterboring all of them.
