Ever put a harddrive in the microwave - buddy suggested it.

So...after all my computer problems as of lately, i'm attributing them to a faulty harddrive. Issues happened at nearly the identical point after a format and start over. I'm too lazy to run a 100% proper diagnostic, nor did seagate tell me to run one. So i've obtained an rma # as it's surprisingly still in warranty. Now here's where it gets interesting.

Buddy says to be on the safe side toss the drive in the microwave for 3-5 seconds. That'll fry the circuit boards, without looking fishy at all. Claims he did it when he seagate was doing funny stuff to him.

Anyone ever tried it?

It does work, as well as if you run a HUGE magnet over the backside(where the motorside is). My uncle work(ed) for microsoft, and he told me this trick to **** some people off with laptops, I tried it :d walla it worked!! lol..He said its a cheap fast way to format :P Not proper..only 1 or 2 times..*safely*..lol

It's not guaranteed to be covered according to seagate. All ya gotta do is fill out a form and they'll give you an RMA number. So...while i think the drive has issues, they might randomly come up with a different solution after whatever tests they do.

I just wanna make sure we're both on the same page before the hdd gets to them, and they don't try and say blah this blah that...if you want the drive back it'll cost you x amount in shipping etc etc.

So...3-5 seconds it is in the microwave when i get home.

Microwaving will definately fry the chips.

I don't think its honest or ethical to purposly fry something then return it for warrantee.

I hope they say no, you purposly destroyed it, so no, we won't cover it.

yea but you gotta think of it this way.... he is having problems with the harddrive... something is messed up with it and it is not working properly and he just wants to make sure that when he sends it back they try it and it works for them and he ends up with a bad hardrive again and shipping and handling fees and all sort.

i had something like this happen to me, got a 5 disc dvd changer and it would not play dvd's half the time... took it back and they tried it once and it worked and so they said hey nothing wrong with it, but since i was there in person i bitched and complained and finally got them to try it again and luckly it didnt work that time...

so Hardcore Rock Superstar's microwaving the HD is basically the bitching and complaining he cant do in person
