Explorer not wanting to start all the time... any ideas?
#1
Hold the Ford jokes please, it's been the best vehicle I've ever owned minus this one small problem.
So sometimes I get into the truck and go to start it and it takes 3-5 seconds before it starts. Occasionally it won't start after the 5 second crank, I turn the key to off, wait a second and then it fires right up on the second try. The other day it simply wouldn't start at all and I had to take my other car. But, for the most part there is a little bit of extended crank time probably 30% of the time, the other 70% of the time it starts fine although most of the time sounds like it might be struggling for a split second after the engine fires and starts. Almost feels like it might die for that split second like fuel isn't getting to the engine. And when I say split second I mean literally for a 100th of a second it sounds weak and then gets going fine. But, I know something isn't right.
So I was thinking, dirty fuel injectors, dirty fuel filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires... anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this?
I brought it up to the dealership last year for this same problem although it wasn't doing it nearly as frequent then and they had it for 2 days and looked at everything and it started fine for them everytime of course and they handed it back to me and said there was nothing wrong with it and then gave me the 175.00 diagnostic bill. I'd like to avoid that situation again which is why I'd like to try and figure the problem out myself and fix it or at least narrow the problem down and then bring it to the dealer with more info.

Hey there, my first guess - sending unit // I have 2 of them and have had every known issue available
try this, leave it overnight, in the morning, put in the key, turn to accessory, not turned over, and listen for a (hummmmmmmm - from the fuel pump) if its longer then like 1-2 sec, then its priming the line, when it stops, turn the key off and do the same thing again, till its like 1-2 sec long, then turn it over (start it)
If it starts fine, or almost fine, then its the fuel pump eather losing prime, usually seen if it sits for extended times line
pm me and let me know how you make out
cheers

Joe try checkin the fuel pump. </font>[/QUOTE]Yeah, I'd love to check it myself but that'd require me doing some things I just don't know how to do.
