lol I was wondering when someone was going to mention Slash...didn't take long. Love Velvet Revolver...IMO there what GNR SHOULD have been.....Axle Rose is gay, but VR has Slash AND Duff Mckeegan....wicked combo.

I think quite possibly if there was a number between 1 and 2 Jesse Cook would fall in there in my list...wicked guitarist.

Number 1 backup guitarist IMO would have to be James Hetfield....he's just awesome.

I'm also a huge fan of Iron Maiden's 3 guitarists.

As much as I LOVE Rage, I can't really say Tom Morello was a great guitar player.....he's good, but he rarely did any wild solo's which is why I LOVE Zakk Wylde....some of the best solo's ever.

If you ever get a chance to see footage of the Gibson 100th anniversary concert...watch it....it's got Zakk and Slash playing some of the best stuff ever.

In no particular order:

Junior Brown- A chameleon, he can and does play anything including Country Music
Jimmy Thackery- A straight forward blues guitarist, the best blues guitarist IMO
Eddie VanHalen- listen to VH first albums and his talent is undeniable, still rockin too
Steve Vai- a seasoned solo & session guitarist, only hard rock but always the main event
Buddy Guy- A blues guitarist but he can imitate anyone’s style he wants to (SRV)
Stanley Clarke- A bass guitarist who belongs on this list best of the best

Honorable mention; Eric Clapton (Hard Rock), Jimmy Hendrix (Acid Rock), Stevie Ray Vaughn (Blues), Brian Setzer (Rockabilly), Carl Perkins (Rockabilly) … These guys defined their time and place in history, each was a virtuoso

Velvet revolver sucks a lot of crap...

Slash rocks, but man does that singer ever suck... monotnous and sounds the same in all the songs..his voice never changes.

Axle was way cooler and gayer hehe.

I have to say I really enjoye Carlos santana.

1. Hendrix (he changed guitar Vodoo Chile and Little Wing still give me goose bumps)
2. Mark Knofler (he can play fast, but prefers to play well - Listen to Love Over Gold)
3. Jimmy Page (listened to Houses of the Holy on the way home from PG last night -- man, I forgot how many Jazz licks he used)
4. Ritchey Blackmore (Malmsteen copies HIM -- wrote "Smoke on the Water" THE best lick of all time)
5. Keith Richards (funny, but SO many bands copy his licks -- He can play just two notes and you know its on)
5. Angus Young (Ever notice how a lot of the great "alternative" bands use AC/DC licks? -- do yourself a favor, listen to POWERAGE)

Honorables:

Stevie Ray Vaughn
Robbin Ford
Joni Mitchell (!)
Jeff Beck
Eric Clapton
Duane Allman
Pete Townsend
Django Reinhardt
Prince (!)

and a few others I'm forgetting....darn senility...
