I've been teaching guitar for a few years now.. a great book to get started is Hal Leonard Guitar Method 1. work your way through that, and you should have the basics down in a few months or so. I dont like using a pick.. i find it annoying.. but it is good for some things. Get one and see which you like better.

You'd probably have an easier time playing a light gauge string. I swear by Ernie Ball "Heavy Bottoms". The E is a 52 and goes down to a 10. But if you don't have nice action, you'll have trouble making clean chords and just get frustrated. Your fingers will get stronger in time and blistered up. Everyone wants to play eletric when you start out cause they think it's cool. But amps are expensive and you'll end up buying pedals, etc.. to compensate for a crappy amp. I play acoustic about half the time. I don't really like playing my Explorer or Strat unless no one else is around and I can have some decent volume behind it. Like driving around your grandma, it's just not right to crank those tunes.
BTW: you have to learn all the tallica songs, Jamez could get hurt and you'd have to fill in for him.

True...

but I am more of a Tom Petty fan...(whether you think he is ghey or not is your own opinion)..

I want to do acoustic firstly. Electric may come, but acoustic is much easier to whip out and play whenever, cuz, as you say, its simply more quiet

Start with an acoustic.

That's what I started with, I got mine for free from my uncle a long long time ago....I just put some Martin Medium strings on it, and taught myself how to play...now I can play a few Metallica songs, ACDC, Van Halen..oh and that's including the solo's... I can play some Clapton and stuff like that.

Then you get good, grab yourself and electric and an amp, that's the best time to learn all your hammer-ons and pulls and stuff like that...the other thing with an Acoustic, is learn some harmonics once you get good, harmonics ROCK.
