Headphone speaker wire

Hey guys I am building headphones into my hardhat for work by using a broken pair of headphones and a new cheap pair. The only thing wrong with the broken pair is that their stereo jack connector got broken somehow so I took them apart and am putting them in my helmet. From the new pair they were cheap because all I wanted was the stereo connector. Now my problem is that I cannot get the headphone speaker wire to work. Inside the black rubber wire casing is a red copper wire and several strands of thinner copper wire. So i figured the speaker was broken so I soldered on some spare speaker wire I had from my stereo and hooked it up to my home receiver and it works fine. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? All I am doing now is soldering the new wire directly to the speaker terminals but to no avail. The one side of the new headphones I did not cut off so sound comes out of it but not the other side. Anyone have any ideas?
