Home Audio Speakers
I was looking for some new home theater speakers and was wondering why there is such a variation in price? I realize that more expensive speakers use better components but is there really that big of difference in a $300 set of tower speakers and a $2000 dollar set? If I new how to make my own crossovers I would build my own using raw drivers. Can anyone tell me the best route to go with a home audio setup?

There is a huge difference in speaker quality, especially at the price points you mentioned. I suggest you find a home audio dealer that has a few different brands and models at some different prices within your budget and go listen for a few hours. You will be surprised at the differences you will hear, and that the most expensive won't always be the best sounding to you. For example my favorite all around book shelf is the Acoustic Energy AE1's, and I have heard other bookshelf's costing twice as much, and prefered the AE1's.
IMO, cabinets make up alot of the difference in the cost/quality of home speakers. Much like subwoofers in car audio -- the enclosure makes a HUGE difference and is often the component everyone takes for granted.
So how hard is it to make your own home audio speakers? I have some experience with car audio and box building. I was looking on solen.ca and the raw driver’s seem a lot cheaper then buying pre-made speakers. I’ve decided that I’m going to get out of car audio and into home audio now that I moved out of my parents house. Its time to upgrade the Logitech Z-680 setup I have now.
If you are looking for something reasonably priced and simple... http://www.creativesound.ca/details.php?model=KIT41

The engineering and testing costs add up as well. The components in the crossover networks, their circuit boards, the complexity of the enclosure, and so forth.. IF the company produces it's own drivers, then R&D costs add up as well.
And of course, if you make terrible sounding speakers but market them to the hilt, marketing costs are high, right BOSE?

We sell DIY kits for making speakers, and we have plans and drivers for a few designs. One of the more popular is a dual 6 inch with a tweeter in a D'appolito configuration, and a ported cabinet. We provide you with "EVERYTHING" except for the wood, and port material(std.abs piping), for $600.
The X/O components are Solen, the drivers are Vifa and Gefco. The design Rocks! and has put to shame a pair of well known British made speakers at $1900./pr.

BTW, this IS a car audio site, right??
