What are you exactly trying to achieve?

Have access to the data that reside on another PC?
Trying to run application remotly?

Is the desktop you're trying to connect to in the same physical location the laptop is or you want to access the desktop from your favourite internet cafe?

If you go into control panel > system > is there a remote tab on the computer that you want to access? I have XP but not PRO and it's on mine.

Remote Desktop is not available with XP home, for remote control of that PC he could use VNC. For file sharing it's just a matter of openning the firewall and share the folder. He can also create a user with the same credential if he doesn't want to be asked for a password every time he access the share.

well what i really wanted to do is allocate some space on one of the harddrives to be accessible from every computer in the house. yes all computers are on the same physical network. I was hopin to do this without any extra software.

O.K. Yuli, try this. Put everything in one area to view. Be it a drive or folder. Right click on the drive/folder and select properties > sharing tab > share this folder > set permissions > then select or add all your other computers to it from the network and you should be all good to view from other computers.

This is the file sharing method that lpchouinard was talking about. I'd keep it password protected though.
