Home Theatre question: talking isn't loud enough compare to rest of sound

Now I've noticed this on a few different home theatre setups and i've never known why. I've always been at the understanding that the talking is mostly done thru the center channel (which i currently lack).
I run a set of towers up front (Athena as-f2) which run as large speakers. Then i've got a set of old stereo speakers i use as "small speakers" for surround sound. Finally i've got my paradigm pw-2200 to pick up some of hte low end. I personally notice the talking is quiter than i'd like with my system. Often the rest of the sound is overpowering it. The overpowering only coems from the front speakers, definitely not a surround sound speaker problem.
Is this a configuration problem on my side - is there anytihng i can change on my Panasonic SA-XR50 receiver?
Any help is appreciated - i kinda notice this prob on my bro's system even with him running the center channel, but i think in his case, the surround speakers are too over powering.

Well, when watching DVD's the talking may seem quite because everything else in DVD's is far too loud. So everything needs to be lowered in order to compensate.
If it's too quite during everything than I am not sure what the problem is.

well you're running a phantom centre? then you have no control over the dialogue (centre channel)..are you running a 4.1 signal or straight 4 channel stereo? I know with my system my centre is at +10 and the "tone" of the centre is set to 5 so it is louder and sharper..the only reason I do this is because I live in an apartment and it would be way too loud to hear anything without anyoing the neighbours..if you are doing a 4.1 system I highly recommend getting the centre and cranking it up..

To the best of my knoledge a center channel plays the stuff that is already shared between left and right... you don't need a center channel for good center imaging..
sounds like a freq. response issue to me.. try diff speakers/crossovers or get an EQ... [img]graemlins/dunno.gif[/img]

a centre channel is a dialogue speaker..for voices..true some music/effects will come from this speaker, but it is mainly for dialogue..if you don't have a centre the right and left channels will "phanotm" the centre channel, but it rarely does a good job..
