How bad is static electricity in your home?

I'm scared to turn on the lights, touch the cable box and such.
I've read that making your home more humid helps, and to tap things with your knuckles instead of your finger tip as they are less sensitive but other then that, it's hopeless.
It BAD in my apartment. It sometimes lights the room up a bit when dark and hurts like hell.

Humidity does help Xiph. If your hands are damp or something when going to touch something that may also help, as some use water to get rid of static on them when they are wearing clothing that tends to attract static cling.

Place a open can of water on the rad that help's . Or use a spray bottle and spray the floor with a light mist of water. Or wear rubber soled slipper's in the house. Or you could upgrade the house ground, just like your car maybe 4 gage.

My friends house is fairly new and so well sealed the lack of humidity is BRUTAL. Used to be after a night of having a few, when I woke up in the morning I couldn't even breath I was so dehydrated. Finally he bought a little humidifier, it helped but like Petey said, the thing ran constantly. He had to fill it all the time. Eventually he bought one that would cover the square footage of his house and it works great. It only runs half the time, and he only has to fill it once a day, I think. We used to flip a coin to see who got to turn on the stereo.
Interesting side note...most people can't even feel static shocks until they are between 2-4000 volts, and they have been measured as high as 15,000 volts. Pretty freaky.
