maybe you misspelled the commands............

Did you start up from the CD and then check for viruses?
If you take a sluge hammer or any kind of hammer, for that matter, to it, it would not solve your problem - only ours.
Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Seriously, checking for viruses when your system is already infected is not going to help. Boot up from the Norton's disc, then check the computer for viruses. Viruses cannot affect CD-ROMs (read only files).
Being a Mac user, I don't have to worry too much about viruses, trojan horses, worms, etc.
Have fun!

Like I said, I am a Macintosh aficionado. I know more about Macs than most Apple salespeople and technicians, but I know very little about IBM compatibles. Sorry. On a Mac, you hold doown the C key while booting up. If the Norton's you have is legit, read the instructions. Starting up from the disc before scanning for viruses is pretty much standard procedure.

You probably don't have a virus, just spyware.
A lot of times you can't uninstall an installed spyware/crapware program if it's currently running.
Do this:
Start > Run > type "msconfig" ...Go to Startup tab. Hit Disable all. Reboot. Before you reboot, disable your internet connection. Physically unplug the network cable.
When you have rebooted, uninstall whatever offending programs you have on there. Some programs will need you to have your internet connected to uninstall, which is BS...I hate that. lol
If there are still some that won't uninstall, you'll have to start the machine up in safe mode (F8 key before XP loading screen). If they STILL don't uninstall in safe mode, then somebody out there is very smart and knows how to **** up a system. At this point the only resolve would be to format and re-install Windows, as there are registry entries that will likely re-seed themselves if you delete them, even in safe mode.

msconfig is a no-brainer. I have had ZERO report of problems from doing this. All you're doing is preventing all the startup programs from loading, and it will NOT affect the way Windows itself loads, just as long as you only Disable all in the STARTUP tab only. You can always go back and recheck what you need, whether it's Nortons or msn messenger or whatever. More simply you can uninstall Norton's and re-install it again.
You aren't beyond hope....YET. heh
