Installing second hard drive

I'm trying to pop in another older hard drive I was given into my pc. I am able to get it to appear in the Bios screen, but nowhere else in Windows. I tried using Disk Management, etc, butit will not show. Yet under the Bios, I am able to clarely see the drive there.

Maybe I'm just over-tired and forgetting to do something. The second drive is set as the slave drive as well.

try putting it on cable select option
also there are Primary master, Primary slave, Secondary master, Secondary slave.
Primary and Secondary is determined by the ide cables i believe.

Im guessing IDE because the phase of "Old computer" anyways make sure your using the middle channel for the IDE cable. then make sure you have a Master and a slave drive the only with windows should be the Master.

Another thing i dont think its Partitioned. or Formated If your using a Fat16 XP doesnt like it that much Just switch it to NTFS

Otherwise do this

Install Secondary drive.
Boot into Windows XP.
Open Computer Management and select Disk Management.
Initialize the drive.
Partition the drive.
Format the drive.
Assign the drive letter.
Initiate changes.

Thanks guys,

I'm actually trying to build a computer from scratch as well for the first time. I'll definately have more than my share of questions to ask.

The drive does not show under Disk Management. It will only show on the BIOS.

Do you have any advice on how to get the drive to show. Im going to assume that I am doing something wrong.

then you gotta try setting it to slave or cable select
look at the harddrive there is a picture that tells you how to do it
also try different ide channels from motherboard
your cd/dvd drive might be on primary channel along with ur priary harddrive
try to swap that ide cable maybe?
also see if extra drive gets detected under device manager or not

That is a bit of a pickle, which brand drive is it?
most companies have a diagnostic tool on there website that you can download.

Try that to see if it has any errors that are preventing windows from seeing it.

I doubt it's a jumper/master slave issue as your bios is picking it up.
Some part of the drives logical components may have gone south for the winter.

Is there another OS on this HardDrive?
Tell me what kind of Drive it is
OS your using.
where you have the IDE Channel and it is IDE right???(aka ugly big cord about 2 inch wide.)
Otherwise On the Motherboard there 2 IDE Channels which your CD playier proably has it
are you hooking up with that IDE?

Look under divice manager and see if it even shows there?

there a Program called Portation Major that will find it but make sure your cables are there and hooked up right its either you have it on the same Channel on the CD or you dont it on Master because its has an OS so make it cable Select

If you need more troubleshooting..... GOOOGLE IT!! but ill help with something to its hard doing it like this:P

Good Luck
