Guys, It is ported (Port on the top, driver on the bottom). It's 18"Dia which is why it needs to be tall (Almost 54"s). It's actually on the small size for a tempest. It's powered with a 300w RMS plate amp in the back.

It sounds really good. It's not like typical store subs that are more midbass then subbass.. With its size and tuning (18hz) it gets deep easily. Thinking back on it, a 12" sub would probably of been big enough.

I have been thinking about building subs like this for people. At half the price of a quality store bought one, its hard to beat.

speaking of DIY home audio

you guys know where to get plate amps for a good price. I know I can pick them up from Parts Express, but any other places out there with good prices, maybe even a CDN store?

thanks.

Do you think I could get away with a 150 watt amp
in a similar sized box and a tempest?

I assume thats 150w's @ 4 ohms?

You will probably want more then 150w's for a tempest.. The 250w plate amps that parts express and creativesound sell are pretty cheap, and would work. I think creativesound wants 250 can for the AVA250.

150 might work OK for a shiva though.
