Price is the lowest common denominator (for the masses).
In a free market economy, this is what happens.

Local (Canadian) manufacturers have to sell value added products to compete against the invasion of cheap goods and labour globally.

Anyone who is complaining about globalization... please consider the PC you are reading this forum with, and where it came from.

mike i couldn't have said it any better
most people don't realize what they are doing by not shopping locally and buying canadian
slowly the retail dollar and the manufacuring dollars are going elsewhere
most people don't think anything about it until it affects them
the primary though of most people is how they can save $2.00
soon all the call centers will be moving offshore and the doityourselfers will be left with nothing but wefare to support them and a case of beer

Touché

However.. I've worked in the private sector for a LOT longer than I've worked in the government.

The first 'career' I had out of college I was working for a company in the private sector. I was 1 tech taking care of about 600-700 PC's.

Working 12hr days was common but I was on a contract so I did what I had to do to keep my job. (even though I wasn't getting paid very well)

I had a talk with my boss one day and said I needed some help. The 12 hour days were killing me and making a client wait 4-5 days before I could help them out wasn't acceptable. I also said that I wanted to make sure it wasn't going to have an impact on my employment with them. To which I was promised it wouldn't.

So they hired some old guy who used to be an accountant but decided he wanted to try something new and picked up his MCSE. Basically all the guy had was a piece of paper and I had to teach him EVERYTHING.

After 3 or 4 months his contract was up and instead of letting him go they let ME go and resigned him. (I was on an 'indefinite' contract). The real kick in the nuts was when they asked me to spend my last 2 weeks there writing out EVERYTHING I did so the guy could do my job after I was gone.

Talk about pissing me off. I later talked to someone a bit higher up in the company and found out that my boss decided on old man river because I was "young and good" so they knew they were going to lose me anyways.

Err.. yeah, there IS a point; basically I've had to deal with losing my job to someone less qualified and it sucks. But that's the way the world works. He offered something I couldn't and they had to go with it.

There are other jobs out there, you just have to find them.

The loss of a call center job or a factory worker job sucks but those are some of the least skilled jobs in the country. (anyone can answer a phone and read a script) .. so just get yourself more qualified and work for something better.

*OOOH god I'm going to get flamed for that last comment... sorry if I offended anyone.

ok fair enough anyone can anwser a phone and read a script but there is a huge difference between someone that does the bare minimum and is just a body in a seat for the sake of stats and someone that actually knows what they are doing and actually helps people. same goes for factory workers, a monkey can figure out most of the menial tasks people get paid for everyday, doesnt mean they are going to be better than someone skilled in thier trade allbeit something as "lame and useless" as tech support or factory work.
