Magnets and T.V.s
#1
I've heard the warnings about this before, but it completely slipped my mind. last night I was assembling my home theatre sub and I placed the driver on the shelf above my TV magnet down (No, I was not thinking).
After I anchored the plate amp, I go to grab the driver and noticed the top portion of the screen is slightly off-colour. - I suddenly realize the error of my actions, and try to correct it. I quickly grab the driver and move it to the floor. As soon as the magnetic field from the sub-woofer leaves, everything on the screen is shades of blue and it doesn't go away (and somehow my wife didn't notice, or at least she didn't comment).
We watch the rest of the news, I finish assembling the woofer and turn off the T.V. This morning - everything returned back to normal.
Can magnets cause permanent damage and I just got off lucky?

Yes they can! Usually screens will return to normal. I did wreck a computer monitor a few years back though! I was screwing subs into a box in my bedroom and like a retard I set one of the subs on top of the computer monitor not thinking! And well, let's just say I didn't use that monitor anymore! LOL! I felt really retarded after that one!

We used to do it to the computer monitors in our school way back when. Our shop was right next to the computer lab so we always had stuff in there. Yup...teachers couldn't figure out why all the monitors were all screwed up. They were getting all man cus they thought they bought junk...lol. I guess it was mean, but hey, we were kids.

don't worry dude, most tv's have a de-gauzing automatically. your tv will actually charge up while you watch it and that chip in there takes that charge out of the shadow mask so that your screen doesn't go screwy like that. if you have a sony tv you'll here a boing every time you turn it on. that is it getting rid of any magnetic interference. your tv is just fine.
