Our non-turbo Probe had a head gasket go bad at about 220k which made us buy a new head but when I asked if it was worth it for a total rebuild the mechanic told me the motor was like new in there. Aside from the crack caused by the head gasket the head looked mint too.
Car got ran over at 289k but was running perfect still and even had the original clutch
I'd buy a Mazda with zero worry - but agree not a turbo at that mileage. That's a whole different story...

Well, looks like I got lucky buying a turbo car.
I got myself an 89 Dodge Lancer Shelby with 222,000k on it and the turbo sounds smooth as a whistle.
She's been using 5w30 all its life and still doesn't leak. No rebuild as of yet.
Oh, right. Forgot it's a Dodge and likely handles 12 lbs of boost better than other manufacturers.

A guy at my work place has one and he has 374,000km on it with the original motor but the turbo doesnt work. His father was the original purchaser and its still running strong.
This is the only car that looks to have a good motor, some of the more recent mazda's have tranny and engine issues.
