Arg, so i have all my tax forms, except the form from the canada student loans people. They sent it out 3 times by now, yet it never gets here. In the midst of all that, i paid off my student loan fully, and they did sent me a confirmation that it had been paid in full, so obviously the address is correct, but for pretty well 3 straight weeks now i've called them asking them to resend and it's not coming thru.

Do i have any other options? Is ther anywhere else i can get this info???

If you have access to a fax machine you can get them to fax it to you.

OR see if they have a local office they can send it to.

OR see if they can make a PDF of it so you can print it off yourself. (not sure if it has to be on specific paper)

You are not required to submit the actual statement that identifies the interest paid in the year on student loans. Therefore, as long as you can get the number, you can input it on your tax return and file accordingly. Then, you can follow up about obtaining the paperwork without the pressure or stress of not having the paperwork.

Its always better if you deal with someone specific such as an account manager at the lending institution. The personallized service is definitely a benefit. Ideally you should be able to at least get the figures from them. It might take a little prodding and somehow letting them know you are who you claim to be. Its just procedure on their part and how to work within their procedure to get what you need.

Good luck.

i'd love to deal with a personalized service, cause i don't really wanna go to H&R block....that being said i don't know anyone and i'm sure my **** is all pretty straight forward....so i don't wanna end up paying an arm and a leg just for 3 t4's, some RRSP's, and some loan interest crap.

*on a side note, i've never had much luck with the online do it yourself thing - apparenlty i'm retarded or something*

If you guys got any suggestions of where a guy should go and what not, i'm open to ideas.

I used to work for a CA firm and have done probably 600+ personal tax returns. There, we use specialized software called TaxPrep. For the average person who is a DIY'er, I would recommend QuickTax.

With respect to personalized service, I was referring more to whoever your student loan was through and if you had a local contact or something that you could deal with to obtain the numbers.

hah alright

well since writing my last post, i've hopped on the quicktaxweb thingy and am doing my tax's, i'm all done except for one thing i'm confused about.

-------------------------------------------------
Unused Tuition and Education Amount From Previous Years

Enter the following amounts from your 2003 Notice of Assessment or Notice of Reassessment.

-Unused federal tuition and education amounts :$
-Unused provincial tuition and education amounts :$
--------------------------------------------------
Looking at my 2003 notice of assessment summary (all that i have for any of my previous tax years) it says:

"Explanation of changes and other imporant info:

blah blah blah...According to this assessement, you have $10,999 of unused Alberta Tuition and education amounts available for carry forward to a future year. For more information, see the explanation at the line 5856 in your income tax forms book"

Now to me, makes sense to enter that $10,999 under the "Unused provincial tuition and education amounts", but i'm not positive thats right. In the end it makes a difference of about $700 on my return and $350 worth of gst credits.

Any help on that one would be great, unfortunately i don't have some neat tax forms book to look things up in, but it seems to make sense the way i've thought it out.

You are correct. You accrued tuition and education tax credits that you were unable to use because of your income level in the past years. As a result, these amounts carry forward and you are allowed to claim those credits in future years, such as this year in your case, where you have adequate income to make use of them.
