My first car :) Need some input
I would opt for Flowmasters. They did put quite a bit of research into making that muffler. Not just through flow numbers, but acoustically as well. But I wouldn't recommend flowmasters without first changing out the pipes from the manifolds back.
Well Im going to say this becouse I think I might do this do my dads chevette. Ok so start at the suspension, without any costs other then welding supplies.. Ok so you start there and you take out all the suspension peices... Take a steal rod and just replace that with the springs, but slam the front end first, and then do it to the rear... Kinda know what I mean? Then just sand down to metal, and drive it.. Thats what Im gunna do to the chevette. Oh and if I have the time, v8 swap. And since this is a real wheel drive car, and a 4spd manual trans, it would be a fun toy car for draggin... But then I would have to put suspension back on ahahh.
Hmm to your car... Do some thins to the interio, the exterior looks fine, maybe if there is like orang in the tails, take some cherry red paint and just paint over that so you get only the white and red on them, that always loooks good IMO. Your stero of course.... If you have accsess to a welder, shave your doors, shave the antenna, the trunk lid ( like the handle and key area) And what ever else. Maybe a dash swap, or a bumper conversion.. LOTS YOU CAN DOO!!!

Thanks for the kind words and ideas guys. My plans arent to go nuts with it. Just make it a clean car. Plans are K&N cone filter with the air silencer removed and custom exhaust or just mufflers for now. I went to a few muffler places and to get custom dual exhaust ran from the cats back would be 1000+. I'm going to look around for some cheapo turbo mufflers for now. Later on I'll get the cutsom duals with some flowmasters. My back seats dont fold either, but I took out the insulation and sound deadening in the backseat and it sounds great. I might just keep the Inhuman afterall with a trunk this big
Hey hardcore rock superstar, what year was your SC? I thought there wasnt much difference between the LX and SC in 97, just the brakes and suspension? I could be wrong though.

I've been poking around a few different places on the net and I guess having 3 cats and piping that goes from 2.5" to dual 2 1/4 absorbs alot of sound. I was going to but a couple Cherry Bomb Turbo chambered mufflers to replace my stock ones but how loud will that really be? With the 3 cats and type of piping, how loud do you think no mufflers would be? I dont want exhaust that you can hear from 10 blocks away, but something deep and throaty and when you punch it its loud.

^ Hard to say unless someone has tried it. On my Camaro Z28 with just the cat it was quite quiet. On my Lumina Z34 with just the cat it sounded like fricking NASCAR - it was damn loud like open pipes.
If you want rumble most of the time then I suggest Blue bottles over Cherry Bombs, or a Turbo or HushThrush style.

that's a great car - borrowed my friend's for a week. Lots of power, comfortable and a zillion after market parts available for it - especially that engine.
too bad the about the gas prices though

Awesome stuff Zack Switching over to the dark side! Thanks for the opinion Pinhead, I'm gonna take the sawzall to the stock mufflers this week and see how it sounds, If it sounds good I might just buy a couple straight through cans and strap em on. Cheapest turbos I could find were the cherry bombs. I heard glasspacks are louder than chambered to so im gonna look into that.
I saw a dyno report that just by changing the factory intake box to a K&N cone and smooth tube got 19 HP.
Wasn't a manf. test either. Those cars to have pretty restrictive intake and exhaust systems. Mufflers alone won't do a whole lot except for sound though.
As for what kind of muffler, I suggest a Dynomax Ultraflow or a Hooker Aerochamber. I have a pair of turbos on my truck and they gurgle nice at idle, very quiet at cruise and on the highway and give some sound at WOT but not enough for me. As for Flowmaster, I used to be a big fan of their purported 'scavenging' technology and such which says their baffles and all that inside the muffler create a vacuum and works with the pulses of the engine. That CAN be true (Spintech uses a sort of similar technology and they sound better than a Flow) but only for a TUNED exhaust system. One that is tuned to that particular engine. Where a muffler sits and how long the pipes are can affect what kind of power can be released from the engine. Just slapping them on won't give the full benefit that scavenging technlogy can bring. I'm educated in Fluid Dynamics and work with airflow in my career all the time. Those baffles aren't helping airflow unless the crucial 'sweet spot' is found.
Cherry Bombs/Purple Hornies/Blue Bottles are quite loud, get louder over time and can be droney on the highway. Cheap though. But those louvres inside restrict flow. Find ones with just a perforated tube in them the same size as the exhaust pipe. Ultraflows use a perf. tube in them. Aerochambers are an interesting design and do not use flow-blocking baffles. Turbos are only really good if they have an offset inlet and outlet due to their design.
