Yes you can cross the border with a criminal record,I know from personal experience,as long as hes not on probation he shouldnt have hard time, the offence which he was convicted of might be a deciding factor aswell, when you go through the check stop they will ask for ID,you give them it and tell them what your goin through for, they may or may not ask if you have a criminal record,if they think somthing is not right they will ask you to pull your car over and they will search it,at the same time they will take you into thier office and make you fill out a sheet of questions, like all your info, what you are goin down for, about your criminal record, ect ect, they can be dicks but its thier job if your straight forward with them and dont give them additude you should get through no problem, remember they are letting you through at thier discretion so dont be ****y or rude to them or your gonna be out of luck, its harder for americans to get across to here than it is for us to go down thier,I get harassed more coming home them goin down, but either way show them respect and dont try no sh it and they wont screw you over

I think everyone (canadians) going south gets a quick trunk search. I've never had any hassle yet coming back into Canada. But to be honest I'd rather have them do the same and have a quick look in everyones vehicles, I just don't want to get shot someday by the Gun that they let across.
In the end, on either side, they are only doing their job as they're trained. It's not personal, don't get offended.

my bro had a dui . They asked him at the border if he had a criminal record. He answered YES it was a traffic offence.

"Trafficing what Sir ?" was the reply.

My bro kept his calm and explained about the dui.

He was let in with no problems after a quick computer check.

Bottom line - tell the truth and the worst is they will refuse you entry. Lie and you may be held up for a few days.

Even myself - I once went down to work in the USA and I had improper paperwork so I couldn't cross until I came back home and got the papers fixed at the US consulate. Anyways I am now logged as having been refused entry into the USA. I must answer YES if they ever ask me the question(Have you ever been refused entry sir?).

When I answer that I was refused entry - the customs officer simply asks why and I explain about the paperwork mixup(all verifiable on their computer) this usually stops the interview dead and I'm waived on through.

It was tough answering YES the first time though I felt like a criminal.

craig.
