Need advise with border crossing.

If you wing it to get down there (good luck, I just came back, they ran my id through a computer), you may not be able to wing it to get back up again, and be stuck down there, who knows what kind of trouble that will cause. yikes. If I were your "friend" I'd call up the US Border & customs to see what has to be done. If you follow that to a tee, then there shouldn't be any problem. A friend of mine tried to get past with a criminal record also, but that was for a fair bit of not-so permisable activities, and theft offences. He was denied entry, and had to take the bus back. I've heard of cars also being checked for illegal mods, like exhausts that are too loud or improper colored lights, tinting problems and whatnot.

WOW...there is a lot of crazy opinions going on around this topic...LOL...it is hilarious actually.
Like not being allowed back into Canada. If you are a Canadian Citizen you enter the country by right.
And as far as your ID being ran through the computer. It was not ran through to computer for what I am sure you think it was.
Oh well...whatever, everyone has their own opinions anyways, but I have personal knowledge so take that!

It is incredibly easy to tell someone they didn't do tings right (any idiot can do that even to somebody who DID do things right). The statement hold water if you can demonstrate the proper way of doing things.

i think your biggest ally is to have a good reason and to be prepped for it. have letters stating where you are going and have all your plans readily available and organized. the extreme car thing is not the easiest thing to get accross here in bc wash border, but once we got it thru once, the next times were easy as pie, the fiorst time they went thru it with dogs and searched everything. we got our document searcehd to and everything checked. we now drive thru and they even mention." so your gonna go compete again eh? . try to cross once and expect to be turned back. but it will pave the way to future trips
