depends what he means by 22 cal .... a 222 is 22 cal and quite adequate for deer as is a 22-250
my dad's 222 with the scope cranked up on 20 power is a blast for picking off gophers at 400 yards
as for a decent all round gun I like a 25-06, it's big enough to kill most things and fast enough to reach way out there
I had a browning a-bolt in 25-06 with the muzzle break, you coulds get some nice tight groups

Deer are a problem at your farm? In the Calgary area?
Dodge has a point, but either gun would still not be a great choice for deer IMO. I used to use a .222 Remington for COYOTES & FOX not deer, used full metal jackets for obvious reasons. Use your little .22 for shooting gophers & pigeons. LOL
I'm done hunting for now, too much BS & it's expensive. If we have a boy in the future & things don't get even more retarded than they are now I'll probably take him out.

Hey gilligan did ya see the love us guns video clip at the too shocking site now that was funny! You all are right i would hate to try to take down a deer with a .22 lr but there are variants 22-250 etc. But here where we live i can't even use a rifle have to use slugs in a shot gun! I prefer the ducks and geese. Next spring it is turkey time!

(basically Hell on earth to put it in Laymens terms)
The funnest is pegging off gophers with a 30-ought-6. Thats basically a high powered snipper rifle.. with a scope.. when those slugs hit something.. it literally explodes... ONLY ONCE out of all the gophers I killed did I ever find a tuff of fur from one.. usually they blow up into smithereens.. and you can't find a trace of them after you hit one.
They are WICKED.. Shotguns are wickedly powerful... count on dis-locating your shoulder if your leaning into the gun when it bucks... its nuts..
We also have a .45 calibre (9mm) World war one re-issue.. its loud as hell.. but man those bullets can even go through a car frame.. its incredible.. that gun is off the hook.. the bullets for it are the size of a peanut.

Sorry but a .30-06 is a pop gun, and if a shotgun is hard for you to shoot your in trouble.
A funny story for people that KNOW guns....I once almost broke my jaw (felt like it lol), when I didn't fold back the stock on a SKS (drunk lol). Nailed me right in the jaw, ah....young & stupid.

Like was said, 30-06 is a moderate hunting rifle.
Also, they don't shoot slugs.
Shotguns don't dislocate shoulders except on feebs.
Also, leaning into the gun is what you want to do, if you hold it away it hurts more.
.45 cal is not 9mm, 9mm is .380 I believe.
WTF is a .45 caliber WW1 reissue anyways?
Also, .45 is a pistol round, and certainly will not go thru a car frame unless it's rusted to hell, or you mean it will go thru the floorpans on a cheapo unibody.

Sks nice fun shooter! What type was it chinese, rusiian or yugo?
As far as the shotgun hurting to shoot definatly not on avarage but i have one that lets ya know ya shot it rather then the norm 2-3/4" shells it will take 3-1/2" turkey loads add 2 1/4 ozs of powder rather then 1-3/8 ozs that lighter shells have and add the lightness of my benelli you know when ya shoot it!
Gilligans hitch do ya still have the sks? I want one! I own a swat style 12 ga with a folder short slug barrel flash light and it is all black that is my little baby right now!

VERY fun shooter! It was chinese, and a friends not mine. Good times. I'll ask but I doubt he'll part with it, if he still has it. I know of others that had them as well, pretty common around here while I was growing up. Shells were pretty cheap if I remember correctly. Some local had LOTS I think.
I hear ya, his comments reminded me though of a time when I took a friend to the firing range. He took one shot with my measly .308 Winchester (although I'd like to point out that it has won more benchrest matches than any other cartridge above the 6mm looked up that little stat, it was the rifle I shot my first deer & antelope with ), and he was like, that's it for me. "That hurt like hell." The big baby wasn't a hunter though (didn't know how to properly shoot a firearm), but boy did I give him a hard time about that for a long time. LOL
I've never been turkey hunting (only in the bar on that video game LOL), & definately no offense here, but it doesn't seem like it would be too challenging. Calling them in would be I'm sure, but they are pretty big and slow flyers no? Fun time though I bet. I used to LOVE hunting Partridge, Pheasant, Sharp-Tailed Grouse, Ducks, Geese, pretty much everything available near here. Bird hunting is a BLAST. Only turkeys near here are at the Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park (strattles AB & Sask.), and are protected there I'm sure. They do have a special Elk draw that I got drawn for as a kid, but never bagged one.
Sounds like you have a pretty sweet 12 gauge man, I've been out of the scene for awhile now. I miss it quite a bit.
Sorry that was SO long, but I guess I really miss hunting. Hope it wasn't a totally boring read.
