Well, it's a word that whites have used to disrespect blacks for years. Going back to the slave times. So what blacks have told me is that the word was turned into a type of joke between themselves because they weren't going to let a word upset them or offend them, and then it started turning into a word they'd use when talking to a friend like "homie" or "brotha" or whatever. I think their train of thought was let's not let a word get us down. let's laugh about it and use the word amongst ourselves. And ignore what it used to mean. Let's turn it into our word.
