Any computer geeks in here ? I aquired a computer a couple weeks ago and Iam trying to soup it up...

Its a ASUS motherboard with an intel socket-478 1.6Ghz processor... so far Ive been able to clock the chip up to 2.08Ghz... past that the system wont boot...

Iam wondering if adding a peltier and cooling the chip below ambient would alow me to push it further.. the board will run up to 3.2Ghz..

(Iam sure Id need faster chipset before I could run quite that fast.. but I need to buy ram before I worry about that)

I'm sure you could get the chip speed a bit faster, but not all that much.

is it the 1.6 a?? 100 mhz FSB? You should be able to get 133 FSB outta that easily.

I run the 1.8 A and it's been going at 2.4 ghz for about 2 years not. runs fine.

yep I know its supposed to be 100mhz FSB... I can't get her over 128FSB or I either get errors when I try to boot or windows will just freeze while starting...

What effect would raising my VCORE voltage have ?

shorten the cpu length and the posibility you can fry the chip. but like .1-.2v shouldnt kill it will jsut maek it last say 4 years instead of 10 lol

VCore is voltage to the CPU, you'll get more speed out of it that way. I'd crank Vmem up too, might get a bit more out of the memory.

Too bad you can't change multipliers, AMD rocks overclocking wise. I've got a 1700+ running at 3000+ speed for the last 2 years, nearly silent cooling too.

Ya u definately need to up the VCORE to get some speed outta that thing.

Just gotta find the balance between enough voltage to keep it running stable, and too much voltage to make it too hot and running unstable LOL.

I think mine is at 1.6, try boosting it up to 1.575 if ur MB offers that (stock is 1.5 volts IIRC right??? LOL it's been a while)

Make sure ur ram is clocked right too, that could be the cause of the problem. Check out the Ram multipliers in the bios, you might need to turn them down a notch.

Good luck,

^I'll try that! I noticed they were set to overvoltage... no setting in bios though, I gotta switch jumpers....

I tried raising my VCORE but as soon as I do it won't start.. it just keeps booting over and over again.... (stock setting is 1.75V)

Im getting back to my origional question here... I have some kick *** huge peltiers, an extra power supply, and lots of room the case to set up a cooling system...... but Iam not sure it would let me push the settings further, only keep things cooler......

I guess for the hassle of fabricating something up that might not even work the way I want it to, I might as well just buy a new processor... what would a p4 3ghz chip cost? $150??

Like I said, 1st. I need ram... the thing only came with 128mb..

Hey.. I dropped memory voltage down to default and now I can raise VCORE and fsb up a hair... and thats it... 2.08ghz... (woot, over 2.05)...

Guess I need a new chip or some serious cooling, (which I decided will definatly allow me to push this bastard chip further.... )

A peltier cools a cpu at like -40. I am sure you can get to 3.2 easily with proper ram and all that fun stuff.

lol

a peltier is like $700 or so a new cpu is only about $300

^ I have access to some high power peltiers... don't worry.... I just have to turn the CPU heatsink into a radiator and add a water cooling system..

I've been wondering because Iam sure I could insulate my computer case and turn the whole thing into a mini-fridge with less work...
