Personal Tax Id's?
#2
I assume you already have a SIN number. Are you referring to the personal ID number that is required to file your return electronically? If so, you can call CCRA at 1-800-959-5525 and they will direct you in the appropriate direction. If you do call that number, be sure to have your last Notice of Assessment outlining your previous year return as they will verify who you are by asking your SIN, address and usually line 150 (total income) from the return.
If this is not what you are asking for, be more specific and I will see if I can help.

Well, a friend of mine said she thought she needed a "personal tax id #" to report the income she earned from an online program. (around $15,000 US)
She's going to talk to the guy who files her taxes and see what he says, I thought someone here might know in the meantime.

If you wouldn't mind, post back here after she talks to her tax dude. I am curious what she was referring. Perhaps she needs a US taxpayer number?
I am not sure what this online program is but if she earned money doing something, would she not just report it on a business statement (2124)?

I have no idea.
She earned the money in an affiliate program, so she's really not sure how to report it. You seem to have atleast some idea on how taxes work, any ideas how she could report the earnings? By the sounds of things, someome else told her she needed a personal tax id to report the income. I'd never heard of it so I couldn't say. She wants to make sure it's reported correctly so that she can pay the right amount of tax on it. It's obviously not T4 income, so I have no idea.

Hmmm ... to properly report the income, it would be necessary to know more about this affiliate program. From the sounds of it though, she had revenue of $15,000. Presumably there were some expenses. If its a self-employed/run-your-own business situation, she would likely file a T2124 which is a business statement. You can get one off the internet (http://www.ccra.ca). You would have to search forms and publications for it. This would be included with her tax return and the net income from the business operations gets entered onto her T1 jacket and subsequently included in her net income. Just a warning, expect her to have to pay CPP as an employer and employee or 9.9% of the net income. However, don't forget to record the employer portion as an expense/deduction from business income and the employee portion in the tax credit calculation.
As for me, I am a chartered accountant so I know a little about taxation.

Woah... someone wants to pay tax? That's a first...
I would wager that the affiliate program is based outta the US and that they assume everyone is an american as well. I believe US residents can can make something like $600 before they need to supply a tax id - meaning that the earnings over $600 are taxable and the id number is the "control" over this.
A Canadian citizen won't need to have this id # - and the affiliate program admins should know this.
As for reporting the income here to CCRA, I'll suggest you follow Keenan's advice - I'm not an accountant, but I've paid (more than) my share of taxes!
my 2 cents.
