ION,
GTO is hot, but $$$$ and $$$$$ for fuel
Even tho its the exact same car I would buy a Matrix over a Vibe. Just don't like pontiac lol
As for the cobalt 50/50 its the first year they're just establishing their ground but that SS Turbo charged one looks pretty nice.
And technically speaking the choices between cars for me right now is a 05-06 Hyundai Tiburon or a 05-06 Chevrolet Cobalt.

Friends of ours traded their Neon for a Matrix. They told me that they found the Matrix to feel substantially 'cheaper' and not ride as well
GM only huh? hmmm
If you could afford a Canyon maybe you could swing the new Solstice
How about a G6 - I hear Pontiac is trying to shovel those onto people for cheap.

The Vibe/Matrix weighs only around 2700lbs so of course it's not going to feel as solid as many other vehicles. Essentially it's a small car with larger-car aspirations. But it's still a great value with lots of well-thought features, tons of room, and excellent build quality.
The suspension is tuned to be on the sporty side so perhaps those friends of Dukk's who traded in their Neon for a Matrix mistook the sharper handling for harshness. Compared to the Matrix, the Neon is just plain sloppy
AKAIK there is no "supercharged" version, although the Vibe GT/Matrix XRS has a Yamaha-built 1.8L 180hp engine shared with the Celica GT-S.

If it makes you feel any better I've driven and road around in a 2003 Toyota Matrix XRS for a little over a year, my sisters husband had one for a demo when he worked for Lexus Toyota. I liked it, loud motor though and high rpm's.

Your weight comment is odd as the Neon weighs in the same neighborhood or less. Same with the handling bit - there is a difference between a performance tuned suspension and a rough one. You immidiately discredit their judgement because it is contrary to your opinion. These people change cars regularly, they experience a good cross section of the market - I trust that when they say, "Our Matrix was ****" that it was...
Don't get me wrong - I think they look pretty cool (I like the compact sportwagon class) but decided not to buy one after looking at it. It's overpriced (or under-optioned at base pricing) as well.

I didn't mean to imply that your friends have poor judgment and sincerely apologize if you took it that way. Note that above I said "perhaps"
Obviously opinions on handling and ride quality can be highly subjective. I've driven both the Matrix and the Neon and my impressions of the two cars were different from your friends'.The weight comment wasn't directed specifically against the Neon. I meant that the Vibe/Matrix is a lightweight car in general; when people see how big it is in person, it's easy to forget that it's still an economy car without all the mass and sound deadening that you might expect in a vehicle of its size. A lot of people are disappointed by the level of road noise etc. not really because there's a high level of road noise, but because it was higher than expected.
In any case, the Neon may weigh roughly the same but it's a smaller vehicle. (Generally speaking, a smaller box weighing the same as a bigger box will be stronger and more solid to begin with.)
For the record, I don't own a Vibe/Matrix, but I still think it's a great car if you accept it for what it is.
Cheers,
Bryan
