this is rediculous

ok so i got the drives working....as well as they well - the controller card has issue's, so i was gonna just not use the 80gb drive, keep the 200gb as secondary.
Anywho..in the process of moving cables around i must have done something, cause things are screwed. The only way that the computer will recognize a (either of two) hard drives is when i connect it up primary, with a cd rom secondary.
BIOS will recognize both cd rom's connected up primary master/slave or secondary master/slave.
Won't recognize any hard drive alone primary or secondary.
I've been swapping stuff for about 3 hours now and i can't sort it out. Both primary and secondary IDE connectors on mobo work (can get cd-roms to show in bios thru either) I've tried the same cables with both, and they both work with either setup. I've tried reversing the power cables to make sure that they work.
Each piece appears to be working, yet the only way i was able to have the bios recognize the hard drive was by connecting it up with a cd-rom secondary to it.
Maybe i fried something somehow? I dunno how to figure out what though :S. Unfortunately unless any of you have any bright ideas on this one, this has me completely baffled and i may have to take my pc into a pc tech for the first time ever.

Have you checked the jumpers on the back of ALL your equipment that you want to hook up?? That is a common problem I see. I NEVER EVER rely on cable select, ive seen more problems with it then it does any good. So I would double check that. Thats all I can really think of in terms of problem, if the card was fried nothing would register....

umm i hmm i was using an 80pin cable to begin with for the two hard drives then they mysteriously stopped booting currenlty, my primary runs on an 80 pin cable, i think the secondary is a 40 pin cable
jumpers are 100% correct.
I've also come to find out, then when i now hook the 200gb drive up, i get halted while verifying DMI...which leads me to believe that drive could be ****'d and i suppose needs to be formatted, which sucks, i just moved all my install files onto that drive and now it doesn't wanna work.
80pin cable is something i never really paid much attention, is important to use or not use it???
