Replacing Alternator on a 94 chevy tahoe - how to tell which version?

Hey...so my bro was driving, and he figures his alternator died. When checking prices to replace, he's always asked whether it's a 105 or a 120amp. He doesn't know, but they always say they can check when he comes in. I personally have no idea what they're looking at to spot whether it's 105 or 120...maybe just a code on the alt?

None the less, we'd rather replace it ourselves, or him himself, but we don't know what power is required. He's poor and will be borrowing money from me to pay for this. He's not into stereo's like me so, although the 120amp alt would work, if he can save $40 and get the 105 or what not, he'd prefer that.

it's a 95 tahoe, 5.7L v8 i believe, fully loaded. Can anyone give us some hints.

Fully loaded suggests to me that it's probably the 120. If it has a factory trailering package it's most likely the 120.

Thumbs up

Just because I like the extra juice, I'd suggest he get the bigger alt anyways....it can't hurt having a little more than he might use on a daily basis, and unless there is a mounting issue with a larger case causing a problem.......the bigger the better.....

yea but you gotta think, from the sounds of things his brother doesnt have alot of money right now and is not into car audio, and if his brother is planning on trading up for something better in a couple years, then i would say there is no point in gettin bigger than he needs....but maybe if he plans on keepin the tahoe for along time then maybe the bigger one aslong as there is not a huge price diffrence...

my 2 cents!

alright well in the end....we never did find out exactly what size it was, one matched, one didn't.....then onto the issue of the belts.....doh, apparenlty ahrd to tell whether there's an air compressor or not. You'd think chev, canadian tire, or a haynes manual could tell us something...but no....and only .7" difference between the two belts...

ah well, things are all running well now i think for him.
