Router Info

Moving to Lethbridge soon for school where I just bought a condo! I will be renting out rooms to people and need to purchase a router.

I have a desktop, and the roomies that will be in this fall both have laptops but I know in the future others might have desktops. Is there any certain brand or model or any type of things I should be looking for when I purchase.... its probably not worth it to go wireless is it?

I don't want to have to worry about forcing poor students to buy wireless routers... any information would help as I am hopeless on the subject!

i always suggest ppl get linksys routers, they seem more reliable than most otherbrands.and getting a wireless one is a good idea , becase most laptops are wireless nowadays, and who wants to have cat5 wire running all around the condo (unless its been wired with cat5 already) i do suggest buying one from a local store just incase i does ever fail ( ive gone through 2 or 3 dlink ones this year already, good thing theres warrenty)

here's a link to one onsale

^^^Damn edit feature!

My D-Link has been working fabulous for me. Although it's a wired router. I can't comment on their wireless ones. But, a D-Link or a Linksys is probably your best bet!

Just please if you do get a wireless router, change the default password and wep encryption. You wouldn't imagine how many people buy a dlink wireless, take it out of the box, plug it in and go.

Dlink DI-524 - may have to upgrade to the latest firmware. It'a cheap buyin, about $40 and a solid router. Personally don't like the Linksys stuff due to the number of issues i've run into with them (used to like them). I've had no issues with my new dlink other than an older linksys pcmcia wireless card not even see'n the signal.

Thats my thoughts on it all, technically any of hte 2 or 3 major brands should work, but the di-524 is the one i've had good luck with.

I personally hate Dlink. Very unreliable router. Have sold over 500 Dlink routers with about a 30% failure rate. Linksys and Belkin have been great in terms of quality and performance. Belkin has a nice wireless G router out right now that is very affordable with excellent throughput and range. Also when setting up your security for wireless I suggest that you don't use WEP but use WPA instead as WEP is easily cracked with two laptops in about 20 mins or about 40 mins with one laptop

Ditto on the Dlink >>>> absolute garbage! The wired Dlink routers are ok, but stay away from the wireless ones. Linksys is the way to go, after yanking the Dlink one and installing the linksys, no more problems.
Ohhh, you want to know what the problem was.... OK, now I have internet, now I don't, repeat.. and after updating firmware, still not working right. Makes a good wheel chok though LOL!
