unplugging a toilet?

So....our one toilet, mysteriously plugged, bro noticed water on the floor the other day, i went to clena up something and throw it in the toilet flush and it didn't evne attempt to go down flowed over a tad before i could shut the water off.

Bought some plunger thats like a bike pump, but it's not fixing anything. The water go's down after a few seconds but not quick enough.

If a plunger ain't working whats the best to buy to get rid of whatever's apparenlty in there???

infared_vision 01-07-2008 08:37 PM

u might have to take the toilet bowl out....something might have fallen in and a plugger won't work to get it out.

zzzzzzz 01-07-2008 09:23 PM

water off
undo the toilet
remove toilet
remove the tampon
new wax ring
toilet back on
do up the nuts
sit and use it

oh the joys of being elbow deep in the of those you love most.... :ohwell:

you need a snake my man..... a steel cable to shove down your shitter with a crank to turn on too.....

Hardcore Rock Superstar 01-08-2008 12:36 AM

haha luckily there have been no big deuces in the toilet. So it's all clean water, or as clean as can be anyways.

No idea what coulda possibly fallen in...as the toilet isn't used as a bathroom for like shower or brushing teeth or anything, but the plunger definitely ain't fixing it.

There's the possibility a condom may have gotten flushed (not my doing), i know they shouldn't...but that'd be kinda strange to caused all this trouble.

I'm gonna grab an inspection mirror and see if there's anything seemingly jammed in that lil u portion of the pipe.....other than that....i've never taken a toilet apart so to speak, don't really want to. Doesn't sound like the most enjoyable of evenings.

But i'll let y'all know how it went.

When it comes to toilets, that's the ONE area I'm more than willing to pay someone else to clean up the mess I've made..

No pun intended

tonez735 01-08-2008 07:18 AM

Try a 1/2 bottle of liquid plumber first.... good luck man.

First try plunger.

Second try snake.

Third, the toilet comes off.

Fourth, maybe a power auger (power snake) if the problem is further down the plumbing

Preventative maintenance.....eat more fiber!

Do you have ice on your roof? There is a hole on the roof that leads into your plumbing so that your toilet will flush properly (air is drawn in plumbing while you flush from the pressure). if its filled with ice, it will create a back pressure resulting in slow/weak flushes and then causing your toilet to plug up really easy. Just go up there and poor some hot water to remove the ice.

Ive had to do this before...

tonez735 01-08-2008 05:45 PM

actually someone with a real big a$$ so that it seals with the seat and a lot of gas might just be able to blow that sucker out for ya too :smilie_da

JayDog is talking about the plumbing vent. It'll be a portion of abs pipe probably 1.5 or 2" in diameter protruding from the roof around 8" or so. As he said, they can form frost around the edge, restricting the opening. Before you get up on an icy roof though, try to confirm if the toilet itself is clogged, or if it's the horizontal branch line or the vertical stack the branch line connects to.

A toilet has an internal trap shaped like an S in it. They are only 2" in diameter so they can get plugged fairly easily. Liquid plumber won't help it. I've cleared out stubborn clogs with plungers but it takes effort and time. A good seal has to be made by the plunger with the hole at the bottom of the bowl to make a good seal because you wan't to move the water back and forth in the toilet trap as you move the plunger up and down to dislodge the obstruction. The pipe under the floor is 3" so chances are the internal trap gets clogged first before the pipe. Try using the cable snake as far as it'll go. If nothing, then remove toilet as mentioned.

We have two toilets in the houe, the other one works fine. I assume they use the same vent, right?

Note, there's no update....cause i got lazy last night, and spent it with some broad instead. Bathroom continue's to be off limits.

They probably don't share a stack unless they share the same wall.

I agree that proper plunging should provide the solution. Get a GOOD plunger with a large bell on it or an accordian shaped bell and work it until the bowl clears easily.

JayDog 01-09-2008 05:12 PM

I dont know if there are more than one....

Hardcore Rock Superstar 01-09-2008 09:39 PM

the mirror did jack. Ah well, I didn't want that $7 or whatever it cost. I'm sure it'll be useful at other times, assuming i don't lose it. Looks like the toiler will have to come off, and there will surely be some procrastinating there.

Plunger i bought is this one : Find Plunge-It Air Powered Plunger and other Drain Openers at Aubuchon Hardware

zzzzzzz 01-09-2008 10:04 PM

if you remover the crapper use a new wax ring !

Dukk 01-10-2008 02:53 PM

That "plunger" is a piece of (pun intended). It blows air. You want to move MASS through the trap and for that you need a whackload of water.

Buy this badboy: Find Master Plunger, 1.6 Gallon Toilets and other Drain Openers at Aubuchon Hardware Let it fill with water in the bowl and then forcefully plunge out and back without lifting the business end of the plunger out of the water.
