Upconverting DVD players - anyone use???
Hey people, my family is all over me about what i want for xmas. Watching a dvd the other day i noticed it was only in 480p quality, which kinda sucks...i didn't pay 5k for a tv for nothing here.
So yeah, i was looking in and see they make up converting dvd players. I was specifically looking the following:
Sony Upconverting DVD Player
Question is....is there a noticable difference in quality? The best buy guy said they were useless and not to bother, but lookin elseware people have said there is a noticable difference. Just wondering if any of you use them or have any experience with any of them....

honestly it sound sliek a waste of time. you cant take a lower quality thing and magicly make it higher quality . just like mp3's or picture files . all yoru doign is making 1 pixel into 4 or so on.
waste of money imo

I have an Upconverting DVD player for my TV and I do notice a better pic at 1080i.
Do some research on the DVD player you have chosen and see if there is a hack for it because due to some copy protection they cannot upconvert copy protected dvd's the main hack you want is HDCP free and sometimes allows converting to be done via Component Video
All upconverting DVD players on convert via the HDMI/DVI connector so you might haveto facter in that cost aswell(unless hacked)

hmm very interesting about soem dvd's not letting you upconvert. I got absolutely no problems with using HDMI, would almost prefer it....but i'd be kinda chapped if i couldn't do it for all dvd's!
You figure it's a noticable quality difference. Hmm maybe i should og buy one at best buy along with an HDMI cable and try it out for a while....see if things look better or not. Then i'll know whether to ask for it for xmas or not.
