welding jobs
soo im in my last years of high school and im interesting in welding ive been working wiht metal for a while i worked at a boat shop for a few summers welding . i plan on taken welding course at the colledge here there going out bc or alberta but what i want to no is it worth it it prolly be 2 years befor i got out there and whern i get out there should i take more courses
I personally wouldn't go the welding route. To me it is still a laborer's job and stinky, dirty day after day. And unless you own your own rig you're not going to make the big bucks unless you do underwater. Just my 2 cents.
Take the job. Yes it is dirky, yes it is stinky, yes it has long hours but the financial gains that can come of in to you in the next 20 years are enormous. The nice thing about working for someone else, you can always walk away and do something different. Try that when you own your own rig. At your age you had better start setting some life goals, this includes working and being financially stable. Anything to do with welding etc. is in high demand, will be in high demand for a long time and the pay is commensurate with that demand. What would you do with $30.00 an hour minimum at your age, is it worth it to be cold and dirty, hell yes.
I start my apprenticeship (for welder) in another month.
I work for weatherford as a laborer now blasting all the parts the welders fabricate.
jman rate is only 27 in this shop, but its pretty laid back here and you can always go out and find 30+/hr....or union guys making a minimum of 35$/hr for a journeyman.
Yes its actual work, its dirty, and some long hours....but the money is pretty decent, the day goes by fast, you stay in shape, and there is something to be said for some honest hard work and getting something done.
Im gonna atleast get my ticket before I change my mind and go to university or other.

I'm doing my pre-employment welding course at LCC right now... There is lots of money to be made out there. Pre-employment is equal to your first year and you are guarenteed 60% of where ever you get a jobs journeyman rate of pay. I love it.
