The Trades

the Trades are where its at.

not a flashy, prestigious line of work but the cash is great.

i've got one year left in my millwright apprenticeship and i'm lovin every minute of it.

how many other people in different types of jobs can make $40+/hr after 4 years in the business.

Power Engineering is another excellent trade with awesome wages. And it can take you around the world. They are also in high demand. And we have millwrights out at our plant sites and they have it pretty good too.

I'm not sure what you would be lookin at for living costs... Anywhere from $350 and up I would imagine. Course is just shy of $4400 and is 14 weeks long I believe. Besides the welding part, lots of tickets are also included in your fee.... Confined space, H2S Alive, WHIMIS, Forklift Operator, First Aid, Fire Safety.. Umm. might be a few more. Welding is a trade that is in very high demand in Alberta so getting a job would be pretty hard not to get. It would all depend how much you want to make, and what type of welding you want to do. Teachers are top-notch and are very helpful. So far I'm liking it a lot.

yea im going to take my pre employment course at SIAST next year, since i dont mind the hard work and because anywere i go i can find a job and make good money

Ive got a question though, so i get my pre-employment welding course and go out and find a job....now do i have to or should get my 4 year apprenticeship too? I ask because our career counselor at school is completly useless... like i was teaching her !

pre-employment is only the 1st year (You will be a 1st year Apprentice)... after you get 1560 hrs of work experiance you'll have to book time again at a technical insititution and take your second year schooling, then another 1560hrs and take your 3rd year.. After that you are a certified Journeyman and you take another test and get your Red Seal which means you can work in any province you choose except quebec.
