What type of motor oil do you all use?
#1
Recently just used normal oil for my car. But my car just hit 80,000 miles. (Sorry don't know what that is in km, you damn goofy Canadians) so anyway I switched to high mileage engine oil as it claims to protect better for higher mileage engines and protect against engine breakdown and build-ups and such! Does this higher mileage oil really help that much or have that many different ingridients than normal oil? Anyone use only Synthetic? I heard this is really good except my car has always used plain oil and I have heard it is bad to change to a different type of oil when your car has been run on just one kind it's whole life? Thanks for the input ladies!

I run esso xd3 15w40 in the summer and xd3 10w30 winter
my mom runs mobil devlac 5w40 synthetic in her tdi year round, my dad runs it in his toyota deisel's too ........mom's car just turned 230,000 km (143,000 miles), my dad's toyota has 380,000km(235,000miles) on it both run like new and burn no oil
I'd run the devlac too but my truck uses 11 quarts of oil per change so that gets kind of expensive, xd3 is esso's best dino oil
today's synthetics are fully compatible with dino oil so you can run the synthetic in your car now if you wish .............

Synthetic is a gimmick. That being said...
I use Castrol 5w30 and will continue to use it until my car dies. My car, an 89 Lancer Shelby, has 222,900k as of now, puffs no blue, no leaks, and has used 5w30 all its life. If oil and filter don't cost me more than the price of a haircut (17 bucks) why not do it every 3000k?

I just use standard 5W30, Quaker State or Pennzoil usually. I have also heard not to switch from normal to synthetic oil, although I do think synthetic is better and not a scam. I think Mobil 1 is considered one of the better brands from what I have heard. But like Chad said for $15 bucks a change I do it myself every few 1000kms.

Who's Chad, and what did he say?
Synthetic isn't a scam at all. I just don't see the use of it considering I would be paying twice or more for frequent oil changes. Oil is oil.

5w30 quaker state > year round.. 74,000 km
I once went to a oil demo at ford, they tested all the brands and the only difference between all of them was the additives, even the best brand, which was esso?? there additives were consumed by 2500 or 3000kms, so for 2000kms your really just sustaining your engine.
remeber 1 main brand makes about 12 different labels.

I use Case No. 1 10-30 oil. I is the same as penzoil except that i get get it dirt cheap. This car has been run on this oil it's whole life. You are better off to stay with 1 oil rather than change to something else. And synthetic is better, but it's such a small difference and with the cost it won't save people any money by getting an engine to last a couple more trips. The only GM vehicle that comes with syn is the Corvette. Not really necessary for my car.
