I'm just curious....why don't ontario and quebec celebrate remembrance day by making it a Statutory holiday? I've talked to people from all over canada, and no one seems to have a solid answer.

Anyone know?

I dont see much done in Alberta either..

I'm forced to work it every year.... same with every other holiday for that matter other then christmas...

no one cares anymore about any holidays.. be it rememberance day.. easter.. or whatever.. family/country comes last in just about every company these days....

Locally it seemed that any 'office' job had it off today. Retail was mostly open, things like tire shops were closed but oil change places were open.

How does having the day off increase the importance of the day?

Why would anyone celebrate a day like this? If you mean why don't Ontario and Quebec have the day off, thats another story.

I listened to a discussion on the radio about this. Pretty much the general answer that they had was many veterans requested it not be a stat holiday because it would get forgotten. This way when people goto school/work most give 2 hours of silence to remember. If not most people would sleep away the day or just treat it as another day off and not know any better.

I was told that Quebec was against the war, when is was going on. They only went to war because the government said you had to sent troops. This answer came from the head office, located in Quebec.

It's not a national holiday.

If it were then schools would also be closed

Hmm guess maybe us non-ontarion's and quebecer's are just clueless.

I kinda assumed since purolator/ups somewhat stopped working on that day in every province but those two that it wasn't a holiday.

For whatever reason dell would only really service those two provinces on that day :S

</font>
The schools I went to had a mandatory assembly each year on the day to take a moment of silence and show us a video to remember.

You're ignorant.

I heard on the radio where its preferred that kids are in school on Rememberance Day, that way they get to learn about it and participate in the ceremonies more so than if they had the day off.

</font>
It's considered a holiday for some but not all. Jordy is right if it was an official holiday for EVERYONE the schools would be closed. And at least in this province the schools aren't closed on Rememberance Day, they educate the students and honour a moment of silence at the appropriate time. And yes Gov't workers do treat it as a holiday. Including gov't involved/run businesses eg. Post Office and I believe banks too? (I may be mistaken about the banks)
