I've had a dell 8100 for 2 1/2 yrs with xp(1 gig, 512mb, 64mb ati7500) ......... never a single crash or problem I load all sorts of crap on it, pirate stuff, play games ect ......... I lug the thing all over and in general I am pretty rough on it, it takes it all and keeps on going
if I wanted a new laptop I would give dell another look agian
on that note some of the guys at work have been getting pretty loaded acer laptops for a good price ......... the word on them is good so far.......... we'll see how they are after a little while
as for the music thing ........... I learned a long time ago I hate kazza, so I went winmx ....... little harder to find stuff but I get no viruses and can find high bitrate downloads

I never said anything against Win98.
I was saying "programs not used anymore" in reference to Kazaa. D'oh! Windows 98 is an OS, not a program in itself.

Get Kazza Lite 2.4.3. Set a system restore point JUST before you install it. If it pooches the computer, reboot, pick 'restart with last known good configuration' and restore to your restore point.
Kazza will only pooch your computer if it tries to overwrite something your system needs (which it doesn't) or tries to use a feature that your busted **** laptop broke ages ago.
Toshiba laptops are good, so are Sony, HP, Compaq, etc. Honestly, does anyone ACTUALLY think the components inside are any better / worse? I have seen many a Sony that took a beating and both survived or didn't (falling off a car for example). Same with HP, or even Compaq. In general, what usually keeps a laptop running is either how many safeties the companies put in place (ie: restore software, virus protection, downright blocking access to certain stuff) to make sure the user doesn't break it OR how competent the user is in not installing software designed to ruin the computer.
My computers are made of 'top of the line' parts and I never have problems (note that 'top of the line' is in quotations because it's a relative term). My GFs computer, on the other hand, is an E-machines computer that appears to be made from tank parts and ACTUALLY smells like burning paper whenever you do CPU intensive stuff (MP3 encoding, movie authoring, etc). Hers works perfectly too (aside from the smelliness which I believe is dust).
