A friend of my moms just had this happen to her and I guess it happened to a lot of other people as well. She stopped to get gas outside of Toronto and used her debit card. Apparently the attendant swiped the card twice then got her pin number and somehow ended up with her credit card numbers and ran up a big total. Her credit card companies can get it straightened out, but she's screwed on her debit card balance, looks like the bank won't do anything and she's out over $10,000. Good think there is credit card protection or she'd be out over $20,000.

I am, and like I said, I really ONLY use it for my Fido account and for parking meter machines. Aside from that, I have not used it in a store or on a website since like 2001.

I am just totally puzzled as to how it got out there, to begin with...

umm someone working at Fido could have sold your card number along with personal information to anyone willing to pay the right price....u know how I know??? I used to work for Rogers AT&T.....and lets just say i've had TONS of hard to resist offers for such infromation. and oh boy is it ever easy to get access to that stuff if you are an internal employee.
At Fido alone your card number probably is passed/could be accessed by half a dozen people. Starting from the person who activated your account, to any call center rep, to anyone from the billing department, to anyone from hardware upgrade department....etc. hope u get the idea.

One thing that people don't understand is that all of your banking information and credit info is all internet based, it's how bank machines identify you. Most people think that if they don't use there credit cards for online shopping that they are safe from internet fraud. Just remember that all this info already lives on the internet, it just waits for you or someone else smart enough to turn it on.
