actually found a nail in the tread, so what could have happened was that the tire was running on the sidewalls and just gave out on the highway

A nail would have created a slow leak.
Which in turn means that the tire, having lost air, was riding on its sidewalls...which are not meant to be driven on, exactly.
And thus, due to usage and weight....the sidewalls probably blew out, causing the blown out look right there.
I see this type of blowout happen on Semi trailers a lot at work, its especially fun when it happens in the shunt yard right ext to where you are standing....

If so, SPL is gonna get REALLY expensive soon. Those tires are about $120 each [img]graemlins/freak.gif[/img]
