So me and my wife are driving to the mall last night and we get pulled over in her car, the cop gives her a ticket for her Euro plate from Hungary her cousin gave her. The ticket is for $115 for "Illegal Use of a License Plate"
The cop then begins to walk to the front of her car and literally tears the plate right out of her bumper, like im mean pulling with 2 hands ripping the screws out of the bumper cover. I get out of the car and ask if we can at least get a screw driver or something and he looks at me and says "Its comming off right now" He tears it off and walks away.

I would be driving down to the cop shop and taking your ticket with you to report a complaint against the cop. Explain you offered but he just tore it out. They should be held liable for damages. Just cus its illegal, doesn't give them the right to damage your car.
I bet there is some weak argument they can use in the Motor Vehicle Act about 'illegal' equipment on a car and the right to seize it on the spot. I know I've heard of people in radar detector-banned provinces where if found in the car, the cop can and will remove it on the spot. I've also heard of people being pulled over for window tint and the cop giving the car owner the option of either the owner removing it or the cop removing it right there.
What they love to do here to the import crowd is give a 'VI' (Vehicle Inspection). Which means you have to bring your vehicle to an approved-inspection facility (like a auto repair shop that has the license to inspect cars) and in some cases, the cop will tell you which shop to go to (knowing they won't give these kids with torched springs and fart can mufflers without the silencers a break). The cost is $100 and it's not arguable like a ticket is. They can, and do, abuse it though. Like handing out VI's to vehicles which might be modified but still legal within the Act or in some cases stock vehicles that look modded (like an SRT4 for instance with it's muffler-less exhaust or STi with it's big *** wing).

yeha i got pulled over for my muffler. 1 ther are kid's in town that have louder mufflr's then mine. then i was reading i nthe paper that blue neon over hte license plate is illeagle, but they will let you have red.
i think that cop's are complete idiot's and have nothing better to do then to pull over young kid's.

So I talked to the Sargent at the district office and was told this by him "The police have the right to remove illegal property on the spot BUT the manner in which this was done is unacceptable and unnessicary"
I took the car down there and showed him the nice big holes and scratches that were made in the bumper cover and filed a complaint. He gave me a phone number and place to go to in order tohave an estimate done to get it fixed up......AND the ticket had somehting to do with the plate being similar to an Alberta plate, he agrees that there is no way a 26" long euro plate with a Hungarian flag on it looks like an Alberta plate and hinted to fight it and bring an Alberta plate and the Euro plate to court as evidence......and the dill new guy who tore it off will be straightened out.
Oh did I meantion that the Sargent is my old bosses brother and that Srgt. Sean Lynn playes poker with us once a month or so....

I thought it seemed a little funny, Alberta has about the most lax laws regarding license plates in the entire free world. Generally as long as the one on the back is a current Alberta plate they let you put anything on the front. Go to a VW show and every watercooler there will have a Euro plate on the front.

It's nice to see your getting it taken care of. Police can be charged with destruction of private property just like anyone else. This also applies police that cut the tint off your windsheild. They have to pay to have it re-installed on your vehicle. You still have to have it removed if they order it, but it is so nice to make them pay to have something illegal done to your car. hee hee.
