Unhappy

I am having some big problems with my computer. I just want to get some opinions before I start buying new pieces and swapping them out. First off, my computer was having trouble using the internet. It would connect to the router, but the internet would not work. It was working fine the night before.

I assumed it was a virus or spyware, and decided it was about time to do a reformat, and reinstall windows. I did this; but same thing. I connected my computer to a different cable in a different location, and right when it started up, it shut down the whole network.

I am thinking that either my ethernet card is toast, or I have a really bad virus. I am wondering if I can get into dos through win xp, and do a low-level format. will this work? If so, how do I get into dos to do this? I havn't used dos since the early 90's. If this won't work, how am I supposed to get rid of this virus?

Any suggestions will be appreciated, I would like to get it fixed asap. Thanks

dude, did u reset your router?? i think that was your problem. you have to reboot those things once in a while.

the reason it did not work in a different location is b/c your computer had originally aquired your router's ip address and once you plug it in at another location it starts to search for that ip.....and since the router is not there your computer connects to nothing.

one part im not sure on is when you said it took the whole network down? do you mean like the whole entire network in your neighbourhood? or in your house?? or just on your computer?

I speak to about 10 people a day that have the same problem you have...

unplug power to modem and router......wait a couple seconds...plug in the modem....wait for lights to stabalize...plug in router.....give it some time...if its a linksys might need a couple minutes...

try it...it wil work.....atleast if its windows xp....otherwise just restart your comp.

Nope, tried resetting the router. By entire network, I mean the network in the house (~5 computers) The computer has been reset, and reformatted. Profilik, I don't think that is the problem. It is set to automatically find an ip address. The instant my computer booted up, my cousin's computer in the next room's connection went down. It's got me stumped. Could it be a bad network card?

Well I got home and tried all of your ideas. Still the same problem. I have a connection, but no internet. I tried enabling/disabling the connection, and repairing it, but nothing. My settings are fine, they are exactly how they were before the reformat. It was doing this both before and after the reformat. I plug it in to the router, it sees a connection, but i have no internet, and abou 5 minutes later, the whole house's network is down, and the router/modem need to be restarted. Any chance I just have a bad network card?
